"What images come to mind if I talk to you about Wicca?

A witch casting spells?

As a fan of the TV series Charmed, which aired between 1998 and 2006, that's kind of what would come to mind. Charmed tells the story of three sisters: Prue, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell, who discover that they are the most powerful witches in the world. The trigger is the discovery of a magical grimoire called the Book of Shadows.

The Book of Shadows is a collection of Wiccan magical and religious texts, containing the principal rituals, magical practices, ethics and philosophy of the Wiccan tradition.

But you'll see, as you read through this article, that this image of the witch is a little reductive!

Wicca is a nature-based pagan belief system founded in the mid-20th century.

Wiccans venerate Nature, often personified by Mother Earth and Father Sky. As polytheists, they may use many different titles for their deities. Many Wiccans will choose particular gods or goddesses from different religions around the world and use these deities for personal devotions.

Many Wiccans meet in a coven, which is a small group of people. Each of these covens is autonomous and usually extremely different from one another. These covens can be mixed, all male or all female, and can be large or small. Likewise, covens will use particular deities as the main focus of their coven. It's extremely important to know that Wiccans neither worship nor recognize the concept of "Satan", "the devil" or any other such entity. Wiccans see "Satan" as a symbol against Jewish and Christian traditions. Although Wiccans don't use the Bible, they regard Christianity and Judaism as a world myth system that deserves as much respect as any religion.

Most Wiccan groups also practice magic, in which they direct and use "universal energy" to affect an entity to the desired result."
