3D model description

Another Cryptex!

This is my version of the contraption shown in the movie The Da Vinci Code.

I worked especially on the design of the haptic mechanism which, in addition to the perception, also allows precise positioning of the letter rings.

For the inner tube, which is itself the latch, I have included two files. One has the necessary brackets built into the STL and the other does not, to leave the possibility for them to be generated in the most convenient way for each user.

Removing these brackets correctly will leave the bolt teeth clean and ensure that when closing the Cryptex there is no excessive backlash.

The encoder ring also has small brackets built in under the balls that break easily with slight inward pressure. The area should be cleaned of any imperfections left by the retractions to allow smooth and correct operation.

I have generated some small holes in the bottom of the tubes and in the end pieces to put there a little piece of 1.75 mm filament to help the correct centering of the pieces when gluing them.

The two side terminations are the only pieces that are glued together. I have used UHU Universal glue. It emits no fumes that can stain the parts and adheres very well and fast.

To code the rings, align the recess (notch) on the inner side of the coding ring (corresponding to a tooth on the outer side of the ring) with the letter to be selected on the letter ring and insert the coding ring into the letter ring until they are flush.

Then place the letter rings, already assembled with the encoders, on the outer tube so that, holding the tube with the left hand, the letters are read correctly and are not inverted.

Align the letters forming the desired word with the indicator on the head of the tube, place the retaining ring and fix it with two M3 x 6 mm screws. (The holes in the outer tube must be threaded beforehand using an M3 x 0.50 mm tap).

Once this is done, the inner tube can be inserted and the Criptex is assembled. To lock it, the rings must be rotated out of the chosen combination.

With a well leveled and calibrated 3D printer all parts will be printed without any problems.
