What Ada did before 1998 remains a mystery, and her ethnicity and nationality also remain unknown. In 1998, Ada became a spy for an unnamed company, a competitor of Umbrella, whose goal was to steal samples of all kinds of bio-organic weapons. Already at that time, Ada was a professional agent: proficient in combat and shooting skills. Presumably, Ada joined the organization for her own reasons, which remain unknown to this day.

In 1998, the organization sends Ada to the Arclay Laboratory, hidden under Lord Spencer's mansion. While working undercover, Ada strikes up a romantic relationship with the new head of the research department, John Clemens, to get information for his employers. John had serious intentions for Ada. He used her name as his work account password.

Before his death, caused by a T-virus infection, John left a letter for Ada with instructions that she could use to obtain evidence of Ambrella's illegal experiments and make them public. However, she never read the letter because she was not in Raccoon City at the time.
