3D model description

Isn't it funny how some events can set things in motion? My Bambu AMS desiccant was all used up, so I decided to order some silica gel pearls that change color when they've done their job. I installed them and everything, but I still had a bunch left over. So, I had an idea - what if I replaced the silica gel that comes packed in the spools?

I did some searching for models that would work for me, but most of them are designed to hold a lot of desiccant, which is just a waste for me. As I'm mostly a PLA user, I don't require a large volume of silica gel, and I always seal my bags when I store them, which limits the moisture that can get in. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and make my own desiccant container.

The goals were simple, then they got more complicated…:

  • Functional :)
  • Easy to use
  • Small volume, comparable with the silica bags that come with the spool
  • Use little filament, use filament leftovers
  • Fast print
  • Easy print
  • To be able to insert in the middle of the spool (50mm diameter)
  • Sturdy
  • Be able to cycle desiccant in a filament dryer without opening it (not the oven…)

I've tested all of my design goals, except for the ability to cycle desiccant in a filament dryer, which remains to be seen. Additionally, since different spools have different designs, the success rate of fitting the container within the spool's plastic bag is around 60%. But, I'm pleased with the results so far, and I'm sure I'll make more improvements in the future.

I should also note that in terms of print time, it's fairly fast:

  • 26m in Bambu X1c (Standard Speed)
  • 49m in Prusa Mini

It only uses 8.19g of filament, which is perfect for using leftover filament.

Print Settings:
Material: Any leftovers…
Layer Height: 0.2
Infill: 15%
Walls: 2
Supports: No
Change filament during print: No
MMU: N/A
Brim: No
Raft: No
All models are print-ready and oriented.

Assemble:

The two halfs just screw toghether. Insert silica gel in the bottom half and then screw the top in.

Overall, I had a blast making and iterating this model, and I'm sure I'll make more improvements in the future. I hope you find this model useful. If you're interested in supporting me, please give it a like, download it, and share it with your friends. Thanks!
