Master of the necropolis

The god adopts the form of a black canine lying on a shrine or what takes the place of one, with a band around the neck. Anubis also takes the appearance of a man with the head of a dog or jackal.

Anubis, son of Isis and Osiris, was the god of the desert and the necropolis. In the Pyramid Texts, he introduced the dead into the other world participates in the weighing of the heart. In the Book of the doors then the Osirian mysteries, he was at the head of the guards of the hours. "Lord of the necropolis", he watched over the tombs. Often honored with the appellation "lord of the necropolis", he was represented in the form of the wild dog or jackal, an animal that prowls in the necropolises. His epithets, such as "He who presides over the divine tent" (the tent where the dead were mummified), emphasize his role as embalmer, "the one to whom the bandage belongs", the legend attributing to him the embalming of Osiris. In the necropolis of Cynopolis (Asyut), the "City of the Dog", he is linked to another canine deity: Oupouaout, "He who opens the paths" and, in the necropolis of Abydos, he takes precedence, as early as the Old Kingdom, over the dog Khentyimentyou, "He who is at the head of the Westerners", whose role and epithet will also be absorbed by Osiris.
