History

Of this SVA model, the version 5 was produced in the largest number. Though designed by Umberto Savoia and Rodolfo Verduzio and built by the An- saldo company, the important contribution to the design calculations made by Celestino Rosatelli is not reflected in the identifying "SVA" abbrevia- tion. Conceived as a fighter but rejected as such by pilots who found it less manoeuvrable than the Nieuport and Hanriot, the SVA (which entered service in late 1917) established itself as a long-range reconnaissance aircraft and light bom- ber thanks to its speed and range characteristics. In 1918 these two roles were demonstrated: it was the protagonist of exploits such as the raid over Inn- sbruck on 21st February, and above all the famous Flight over Vienna on 9th August, in which Ga- briele D'Annunzio took part and where leaflets with a text written by him were dropped onto the city which Gabriele D'Annunzio was the creator and celebrating poet. In 1920, the two-seater SVA 9 version was used by Arturo Ferrarin and Guido Masiero in the Rome-Tokyo raid. The aircraft re- mained in service with the Regia Aeronautica un- til 1927. playing an important role in the first phase of the reconquest of Libya. The example on display, produced in 1918, was used by the then Lieutenant Giordano Bruno Granzarolo in the Vienna raid and bears the insignia of the Lion of St. Mark of the 87th "Serenissima" Squadron, which was the protagonist of that exploit, with an indication of the main war missions flown and three aerial victories.
