Officially Extinct in 2007
Lipotes vexillifer, also known as the Yangtze River dolphin or Baiji dolphin, was a species of freshwater dolphin that was native to the Yangtze River in China.
It was one of the most endangered species of cetaceans in the world and was declared functionally extinct in 2007, after an extensive search failed to find any individuals in the wild.
The main threats to the Baiji dolphin were habitat loss, pollution, overfishing, and accidental entanglement in fishing gear. The extinction of this species serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
