Diceros bicornis longipes, commonly known as the Western black rhinoceros, was a subspecies of the black rhinoceros that was distinguished from other subspecies by its smaller size and longer, more slender legs.
The Western black rhinoceros was heavily hunted for its horn, which was highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine and as a luxury item. The subspecies was declared extinct in 2011, with the last confirmed sighting occurring in 2006.
The loss of this subspecies highlights the need for continued conservation efforts to protect the remaining black rhinoceros populations from similar threats.
