3D model description

Stop your cables from falling off your desk, bedside table, and more! This is a remix of the Customizable Cable Catcher (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:547802) by TheNewHobbyist (https://www.thingiverse.com/thenewhobbyist/designs). It is intended to address multiple issues brought up in the comments, as well as some of my own requirements.

Customization notes: There are two known caveats to customization, mostly due to my newness to OpenSCAD. If there ends up being demand, I can address them.

  • Customizing/rendering in OpenSCAD requires BOSL2
  • Rendering this model in OpenSCAD is a little slow. It takes 1-2 seconds on my fairly-recent laptop.

New Parameters

Top/Bottom clip depth: Adjust the depth of the top/bottom portions of the clip to accommodate for space constraints, such as a shallow overhang.

Cable diameter: This is the diameter of the cable hole. I recommend making it 0.5-1mm larger than the largest cable you intend to use.

Other fixes in this design mean it can now retain cables that are considerably smaller than the hole. When tested, a 7mm hole easily retained a 2.5mm cable (the smallest I had handy).

Fixes

Desk thickness: There was a bug in the original where the model would be too narrow for the specified thickness. This has been fixed.

Strength: The back-plate is thicker, which should prevent it from bending/breaking with normal use.

Grip: The angled bottom clip has been replaced with a flat (horizontal) surface with a small hook at the end, allowing for better surface engagement. This has only been tested with wood and wood-like furniture.

Cable retention: The cable retention prongs have been modified to be curved hooks, which should capture and retain the plug of a slipping cable. The slots have been narrowed to half the specified diameter, which should prevent even smaller cables from easily slipping out.

Cable insertion: The slots are now rounded on the outside, which acts as a sort of "funnel" during cable insertion. Additionally, the prongs have been made thinner, allowing for some (but not too much) flex during insertion.

Reduced wear: Non-retention surfaces which contact the cables and furniture are now rounded to prevent scratches and excess furniture wear.

Aesthetics: Previously, changing some parameters could cause the hexagonal holes to end up inconveniently-placed. Now, are added/removed/shifted appropriately when different elements are resized.
