3D model description

Christmas is fast approaching and GetPrinted3D is feeling festive! We've decided to make 3D printable Christmas ornaments in the same style as our popular line of stained-glass suncatchers.

This STL file pack comes with two types of mix-and-match ornaments for a unique multicolor display that will coincide with any theme.

Christmas Ornament Silhouettes - Single or Multi-Color
The Silhouette file is a negative space outline of our vintage ornament design. There is a front and a back so you can print each ornament in one or two colors. We recommend printing in dual colors to create a beautiful drop-shadow effect.

The front and back pieces are made to fit together so that lining them up is a cinch. One piece has three pegs sticking up, while the other piece has three recessed holes to drop the pegs into. Simply snap them together or use a dot of glue, then apply a Xmas hook at the top, and you're ready to decorate.

Multicolor Christmas Ornaments
The full-color design is made to mimic the shimmering beauty of stained glass. There are five pieces to each ornament - the Top, the Bottom, the Light Color, the Dark Color, and the Cap (traditionally silver).

For the light and dark, choose any two filament colors that will blend well together (red and gold, green and silver, pink and purple, etc.) The Cap is traditionally silver or gray, but any metallic color will do. For the top and bottom outlines, black usually works best, but you could always use something like a dark purple to outline blue and pink, or gold around black and white. That is the beauty of these ornaments - you can be creative and print them to match any theme or color scheme.

Printing and Building the Multi-Color Ornaments
The Top and Bottom can be printed with basic settings, but the Light and Dark Color pieces must be printed in exactly 0.16 Layer Height and 0.16 Initial Layer Height. They print just two layers thick (0.32mm). These are the "stained glass" pieces that bring the design together. They must be thin enough to remain slightly translucent so that they illuminate with the lights on the tree. We recommend printing them on a glass printer bed, without glue if possible, so that you get a sleek shine on the surface. If you are using glue, clean the bed first so there's no build-up of old glue beneath.

If you don't have a glass print bed, you may want to "Enable Ironing" in your slicer so that the nozzle goes back over the top surface to make it nice and smooth.

Once all your pieces are printed, think of the ornament like a puzzle. The Bottom piece has raised edges on the inside for each colored piece to set into. Line them up, then use a few tiny dots of glue to set each color in its position. It should be very obvious what goes where, but use the images above for reference as needed. Add more tiny dots of glue to the underside of the Top piece, press it over the Bottom, and use clothes pins or office clips to secure them tightly until the glue dries.

Multi Coloring Ideas
If you want to create a themed set of ornaments, select three colors that work well together—for instance, Red, Green, and Gold. Print one complete silhouette (front and back) of each color. Then pair them - Red with Gold, Gold with Green, Green with Red - to create a drop-shadow effect.

Use the same color pairings to print the multi-color ornaments, using Red, Gold, and Green for the Light and Dark colors. You can use Black for the outline and Gray or Silver for the Cap. This will create a set of 6 beautiful and uniquely matching ornaments.

DIMENSIONS
At 100% scale and fully assembled, these Christmas ornaments measure:

Classic Ornament Silhouette
X = 8.0cm / 3.15in
Y = 10.0cm / 3.94in
Z = 0.28cm / 0.11in

Vintage Multicolor Ornament
X = 8.0cm / 3.15in
Y = 10.0cm / 3.94in
Z = 0.28cm / 0.11in

Note that scaling the ornaments smaller is not recommended due to the thinness of some of the lines, especially the pegs and peg holes in the silhouettes. If you choose to scale them larger, do not change the Z scale as it will thicken the colored sections and may ruin the stained glass effect of the multicolor ornaments.

Speed: 60 (Bambu - Default Standard)

Important The settings for the colored Stained Glass Panels are crucial. The layer height and initial layer height must be set at 0.16 to ensure they are exactly 0.32mm thick. They will not fit in the recessed areas of the Bottom section if they are any thicker, and may lose their luminescent transparency.

Tip Try using Silk filaments to print the Stained Glass Panels. They won't be as translucent, but they will have a beautiful sheen that reflects the Christmas lights around them.
