3D model description

I designed these mounts to attach outriggers to the wings of my Mini Talon VTOL build.

The mounts connect the pre-existing twin carbon fibre tube spars inside the Mini Talon wing to 14mm strong longitudinal outriggers hanging underneath each wing. This builds an H-frame of sorts for the VTOL quadrotor motors to mount on (using my motor mounts: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3323368).

For a complete build, you'll need 4x the Upper part, and 2x of each of the Lower ones. Print using ABS or PETG at high infill and 0.20mm or lower layer height for good strength. PLA can be used, but be aware of its brittleness, especially after prolonged exposure to sunlight and/or rain.

Assembly:
- Print out all the parts, check that M3 screws fit through the holes cleanly (drill out to 3.1 or 3.2mm if necessary) and that the central hole cleanly wraps a 14mm tube.

  • Mark and cut out slots in the wings right above the spar tubes (see pictures). Cut and remove foam deep enough that the Lower part can be inserted all the way and snaps onto the spar tube.

  • Insert M3 lock nuts into the side holes of the Lower parts. Loosely screw the Upper parts on using M3x18 screws.

  • Insert the 14mm tube into both the Front and Rear pair of mounts and space them correctly. Test-fit. Tighten slowly alternating between the two screws, so that the halves remain straight and are not crooked to one side.

  • After ensuring that everything fits properly, glue the Lower parts into the cut-out slots. I used UHU Por glue for this, others might work. Make sure the glue covers both wide sides and the spar tube solidly, and insert the mounts all the way down to ensure good fit on the spars.
