Historical background:

The Gondrée Café, located next to Pegasus Bridge in Bénouville, Calvados, Normandy, France, holds significant historical importance as one of the first buildings liberated by Allied forces during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. Situated near the bridge, the café played a pivotal role in the early hours of the invasion and became an iconic symbol of Allied victory.

In the early hours of June 6, 1944, British airborne troops from the 6th Airborne Division landed near Pegasus Bridge as part of Operation Deadstick. Their mission was to secure key bridges across the Caen Canal and the Orne River to prevent German reinforcements from reaching the invasion beaches.

The Gondrée Café, owned by the Gondrée family, was one of the few buildings in the area and served as a gathering point for British paratroopers following their successful capture of Pegasus Bridge. It provided much-needed shelter, refreshments, and medical aid to the troops amidst the chaos of battle.

The café's proximity to Pegasus Bridge made it a strategic location for both Allied and German forces during the intense fighting that followed the initial landings. Despite sustaining damage during the conflict, the café remained standing and continued to serve Allied troops throughout the Normandy campaign.

Today, the Gondrée Café stands as a living monument to the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the D-Day landings. It remains in the ownership of the Gondrée family and has been preserved as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the events of that historic day and honoring the memory of those who served.
