3D model description

With the recent discovery of propagation methods, I wanted to try my hand at making a marcotting ball, sometimes called a grafting ball.

It makes it easy to perform aerial layering, a technique which consists in making the plant believe that its branch is touching the ground (the sphere is filled with moist potting soil), and therefore will produce roots inside the ball in a few weeks/months.

There are currently 3 sizes, which vary according to branch diameter (common commercial sizes):

  • Size S (10mm branch, 55mm sphere)

  • Size M (13mm branch and 80mm sphere)

  • Size L (33mm limb and 120mm sphere)

To close the two half-spheres, you can use clamps (to prevent moisture escaping).

02/21/2024: The file size L had a defect, it has been updated.

3D printing settings

Each file needs to be printed twice for a complete sphere.

I recommend printing the two half-spheres flat part on the tray, with organic supports for the dome.

For my part, printing at 200Β°C, filling at 10%. (To be confirmed after my weathering tests directly on the plant).
