3D model description

A hinging panel for behind the head of Robosen's ELITE Optimus Prime, that automatically flips down when transforming into a robot, and automatically closes again when transforming into a truck. No more need to manually remove the head panel.

FEATURES
- Easy plug-in assembly with pegs and grooves.
- Reversible top / bottom: Your choice which side of the panel goes up.
- A hole in the panel keeps the microphone unobstructed.
- The hole doubles as a 5mm port for equipping Transformers action figure weapons in truck form.

BACKGROUND STORY
I was not the only person to notice that the Robosen Optimus Prime robot would look better if the vertical panel behind its head would flip down automatically somehow. I initially planned to make a panel out of cardstock, but had a hard time coming up with a durable mechanism to use as hinge. Later I noticed Jmoonie''s 3D-printed panel for Flagship Optimus Prime, but none for the Elite, and I was not planning to buy myself a 3D printer anyway. Several months later however, I bought a robot arm that coincidentally also happened to be capable of 3D-printing, so I purchased Jmoonie's file and tried scaling it down to the Elite's size. Unfortunately the proportions and angles were off, and the hinge, though brilliant, was not really made for a smaller size. There were also a few things that I would have done differently one way or the other, and so I spent a week of my time over-engineering a design of my own for the Elite robot, with this as result.

3D printing settings

Plate: 30% infill, 4 grams PLA, 60 minutes
Hinge: 100% infill, 2 grams PLA, 20 minutes

PLA
temperature 205 degrees
layer height 0.2 mm
line width 0.46 mm
outer walls before inner walls
seam at back
ironing on
fan 100%

POST-PROCESSING AND ASSEMBLING
Remove any stringing between the panel's pins, remove blobs at the base and seams of the hinge if necessary.
Choose which side of the plate you want to be at the top in truck mode (ridged or flat side), and slide the panel's pins into the hinge, through the grooves in the left and right ends of the hinge.
Repeatedly wiggle the panel back and forth to loosen it until there is no more resistance. If still not loose enough, shave off half a millimeter from the left or right ends of the hinge.
