Description

The F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine air superiority fighter developed by McDonnell Douglas. It first entered service January 1976, and is still currently in service in United States, Japan, Israel, and Suadi Arabia. It was made to replace the F-4 Phantom, but rather than being a multirole fighter like the F-4, the USAF choose an aircraft focused on air superiority. The F-15 has seen extensive use in The Gulf War, Yemen Civil War, And many other conflicts in the Middle East. Through these conflicts the F-15 has shown its capabilities has a dominant fighter.

In 1978 the USAF started a program focused on achieving an Anti-Satellite weapon that can be launched from an aircraft. The F-15A was chosen as a launch platform for its high-performance capabilities. The ASM-135 ASAT was an 18-foot (5.4 Meters) long three-stage missile, with two booster stages and a Miniature Homing Vehicle (MHV) stage. This missile would be launched form the F-15 at 38,000 feet (11,582 Meters) during a supersonic climb. From there the missile would continue to an altitude of 350 miles (563 Kilometers) tracking the satellite with its infrared sensor. The F-15A used to launch this were modified with a centerline pylon and special targeting system to display on the HUD. From January 1984 to September 1986, five test launches would be conducted. one of these on 13 of September 1985 would successfully shoot down the P78-1 Solwind satellite. the F-15A that launched this missile would be named the “Celestial Eagle” Claiming the only satellite kill by an aircraft-launched missile.
