3D model description

This carrot shaped cat grass grower is designed to grow cat grass hydroponically, using water rather than soil. Cat grass is a great natural hairball remedy and provides fiber for your cat.

This grower includes the carrot basin which holds the water, a seed basket that sits down in the top of the basin and then an optional tray to put the basin on for catching any overflow. I am including two carrot options, one with an overflow slot and one without. Having the overflow slot will allow any water to exit that is able to touch the bottom of the seed basket and over soak the seeds. Only the roots that grow through the basket should be in the water. Excess water will run down the outside through the slot should you put too much in. You can also use it to tip water out without having to pull off the seed tray. Otherwise, you can just carefully fill it and be sure not to let the water get too high. This will be more difficult to measure when the roots are extending down into the basin so I recommend the slot version.

These are the seeds I used: https://amzn.to/3URhCRN
This is the matte orange filament I used: https://amzn.to/4bL7m3w

Steps:
1.) Measure how many seeds you need by spreading them out in the basket to cover the surface.
2.) Dump those either in the basin or another container and soak for 12 hours.
3.) Spread the seeds back into the basket.
4.) Place them in the sun and pour a little water on them daily until they start sprouting.
5.) Once they are sprouting, fill the basin up to just below the overflow slot (or below where the basket will sit if you didn’t print the overflow slot version). Pour slowly so you don’t overflow.
6.) Change water every couple of days.

Grass will be ready for consumption in 6-10 days. Your cat can eat directly from the grower or you can cut the roots off and pull the grass out and cut up to add to food. Richard Parker did both.

3D printing settings

This grower will constantly be full of water, so you will want to use more perimeters to keep it as watertight as possible. On the basin, I used 5 walls, 4 bottom and top layers, .24 layer height, and 20% cubic infill. I dislike the look of random seams but it is said that they are more watertight. No supports are needed on the basin.

The seed basket will need supports around the top edge of it. I used .24 layer height, 5 walls, and 3 top and bottom layers. I used aligned seams on this piece.

No supports are needed for the tray. I used .24 layer height, 5 walls, and 4 top and bottom layers.
