RGD-5 Hand Grenade - Russian

This is the Russian RGD-5 (RGD-5), Granata Distantsionnaya, Distance Hand Grenade or Time-delayed Hand Grenade, a post-World War II, High-Explosive Fragmentation (HE-Frag), Anti-Personnel (AP), defensive, hand grenade, designed in the early 1950s, also made in Bulgaria, Albania, Georgia and Germany with a Chinese copy designated the Type 59.

The RGD-5 was accepted into service in 1954 and is still in service with many of Russia's former client states and has been supplied to Iraq as well as other Arab nations.

The grenade produces around 350 fragments.

The grenade is egg-shaped with no external ribbing, except for a lateral ridge where the two halves of the grenade join.

The surface has a few small dimples on it with a green or olive drab, paint-scheme.

Many millions of RGD-5s and their clones have been manufactured over the years and although not as advanced as more modern grenades which are specifically designed to penetrate standard body armor, the RGD-5 is still an effective and inexpensive grenade.
