This is the American AIM-7 Sparrow, a medium-range, Semi-Active-Radar (SAR), homing Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) with a Continuous-Rod Warhead (CROW) initiated by a Proximity (PRX) fuze, an active Radio-Frequency (RF) fuze, or a contact fuze.

The missile can intercept and destroy targets in adverse weather conditions.

The AIM-7 is a semi-active radar (SAR) missile that is guided on either continuous wave or pulse Doppler radio frequency energy radiated by the launching aircraft and reflected by the target.

The missile is guided, controlled, and detonated by the target seeker and flight control sections.

The warhead is of Continuous-Rod Warhead (CROW) design that expands upon detonation of its explosive charge to produce target destruction.

The solid-propellant rocket motor provides the thrust.

A ship-launched surface-to-air missile, the RIM-7H, is a variant of the AIM-7E and is called Sea Sparrow.
