Historical background:

The 10.5 cm leichte Feldhaubitze 18 (10.5 cm leFH 18) was a German light field howitzer used extensively during World War II. Developed in the 1920s by Rheinmetall, the leFH 18 was designed to provide German artillery units with a versatile and effective artillery piece for supporting infantry and armored units on the battlefield.

The leFH 18 was known for its reliability, mobility, and firepower. It fired 105 mm shells with impressive accuracy and range, making it effective against enemy infantry, fortifications, and light armored vehicles. Its relatively light weight and compact design allowed for easy transport and rapid deployment.

One of the key features of the leFH 18 was its split-trail carriage, which enabled it to be quickly set up for firing and easily repositioned as needed. It could be towed by horse-drawn or motorized vehicles, providing German artillery units with the flexibility to maneuver on the battlefield.

During World War II, the leFH 18 served on all fronts, from the deserts of North Africa to the harsh conditions of the Eastern Front. It played a vital role in providing fire support for German infantry and armored units, as well as in counter-battery fire against enemy artillery positions.

In addition to its role as a traditional field howitzer, the leFH 18 was also adapted for use in various self-propelled artillery vehicles, such as the Wespe and the Hummel. Its versatility and effectiveness made it one of the most widely used artillery pieces in the German arsenal during World War II.

After the war, the leFH 18 continued to see service in various armies around the world, testament to its enduring reputation as a reliable and effective light field howitzer.
