Historical background:

The 15 cm schwere Feldhaubitze 18 (15 cm sFH 18) was a German heavy field howitzer used extensively during World War II. Developed in the late 1920s and early 1930s by Rheinmetall, the sFH 18 was one of the most widely produced and versatile artillery pieces in the German arsenal.

The sFH 18 was known for its excellent range, accuracy, and hitting power. It fired 150 mm shells over long distances, making it effective against both enemy infantry and fortifications. Its ability to deliver high-explosive shells with devastating effect made it a valuable asset for German artillery units.

The design of the sFH 18 incorporated several innovative features, including a split-trail carriage that allowed for rapid deployment and firing. It could be towed by a variety of vehicles or broken down into several loads for transport over rough terrain.

During World War II, the sFH 18 served on all fronts, from the deserts of North Africa to the bitter cold of the Eastern Front. It played a crucial role in providing fire support for German infantry and armored units, as well as in counter-battery fire against enemy artillery positions.

In addition to its role as a traditional field howitzer, the sFH 18 was also adapted for use as a railway gun and as the main armament for self-propelled artillery vehicles, such as the Hummel.

After the war, the sFH 18 continued to see service in various armies around the world, testament to its effectiveness and reliability as an artillery piece. Its legacy as one of the most potent heavy field howitzers of World War II endures to this day.
