Description

Airless PingPong Ball 2.0. Listened to feedback from more than 1000 users that download the first iteration and updated the geometry design accordingly. Highlights of the update:

  • Dissolved the pattern row that in some cases led to layer adhesion problems.
  • Extended the “Pole-like” geometry with bigger poles generating more spin.
  • 3% weight reduction while slightly improving structural resistance.

Still very important!

  • Print with a Strong PLA like Overture's Super PLA +, or a rigid ABS/ASA for the best results. Flex PLA and TPU 98A will also work, but will be a trade off - They'll basically not break but will experience slight decrease in bounce.
  • If possible, print with slower speeds for the best results! (The one on the photos was printed in “Silent Mode” (50% of the speed) - it improves structural resistance as really thin like 3d printed structures bennefit greatly from steady printing (the less the vibrations while printing, the better)

thanks man, that's great. if you don't mind, could you share which ABS filament did you use? I actually really have to make a comparison between a pla ball versus an ABS printed one to see if the density of the filament really makes an impact on the durabilityt/bounce ratio of the ball

I used pla+ and it is surprisingly sturdy and bouncy. perfect model!

bounces well, a little fragile though and could use thicker walls IMO. Mine split in half, but then again I did let my cat play with it, so who knows how much that could have weakened it

hey man thanks for the review I know the ball can be fragile with simple PLA or PETG but the main goal here was to get the weight of an official ping pong ball as a Target. I could have thickened the walls of the model at the cost of adding more weight to the ball. If you have access to a more tough material like a PLA tough overture super PLA plus I really recommend you try and print it with it cuz I've done it and I've got really great results with it!

Much improved over v1 Same type of Sunlu ABS (different color) The supports are easy to remove if we get the ABS to cooldown to room temperature after printing, but the center portion remains tricky. A little sanding will remove everything. If you want to have some extra work do not rely on generated supports by the slicer or even manual painting supports, and place the supports manually on the original drawing, that might help. On the speed topic I go with these settings

Thanks for the feedback man! Great to hear you had a positive experience. I've heard about doing the supports manually while modelling, I just really have no idea how to proceed with that, but I will look into it to see how it's done best. thanks again for the help!

the ball is aesthetically beautiful but it doesn't do the job it is designed for which is the most important thing, the ball is extremely weak, it broke in half on the first shot, it was impossible to play with it.
