This year marked the release of his debut album, "The College Dropout," which challenged the prevailing norms and narratives within the genre. West, who had already established himself as a prodigious producer with his soulful beats on Jay-Z's "The Blueprint," was initially met with skepticism by record labels when he expressed his desire to rap.
