Description

This is an adaptation of Celestin's Desk trash bin. The screw style has been changed to a thumb wheel and moved to the inside of the bin so that its contact point is with the bounds of the top arms. This keeps the bin level while allowing higher clamping force to be applied (don't over do it). The reinforcement band has also been extended around the desktop cutout and around the screw mount. A very slight chamfer was added to the top and bottom inside corners of the cutout to hopefully reduce the risk of layer separation at those points.

The screw on Plate 1 is scaled to 96% in the X and Y axes to give the threads adequate tolerance with the .20mm layer height. Plate 2 has screws at different tolerance and layer heights in case the default fit doesn't work for you. There's also a knurled nut you can use for fit testing or as a fidget toy.

* Note, it is not necessary to print Plate 2 unless you want to experiment with different thread tolerances or layer heights.

April 27, 2024 update: added extra print profiles for taller and larger versions, both supporting thicker desktops. Print parameters for these have been adjusted from original for better surface finish and fit with PLA Basic (original version was tested with PLA Matte). If you are printing the large version, you will need to print both plates. The additional screw variants have been deselected on this one, but can be printed if needed.

@CaseyF3D thanks for bringing to my attention. Unfortunately I did not notice the print profile was not updated from a draft version when a replaced the model file. The correct version is uploaded.

Let me know how it goes! Please make sure this file has the reinforcement band all the way around the notch, not just at the very top. (see first photo)

Built the tall version out of PLA and it worked well. I went to 0.28 layer height and strong tree supports which reduced the print time to less than 6 hours for the box itself.

Thanks for feedback and glad that printed well for you. I had trouble getting adequate support with the tree style. I don’t believe I tried the strong variant though.

For your adaptation, did you adjust the thickness of the supported desk? I'm hoping to find a bin that supports a 1.75 inch/4.445 cm thick desk.

This model has a 35mm opening. Unfortunately I'll be away from my workstation for a few days, but once I'm back I will add a profile for thicker desktops.

I've added two new profiles. One has the same footprint as the original while the other is about an inch wider and deeper. Both are taller and will support a 50mm (~2") thick desk.

got the model before modifications, where the screw did not fit… new model should be good, haven’t tested yet.

You can reprint just the screw from the current model since no adjustment was made to the threads on the bin itself. It prints very quickly. You can also print plate 2 if you want to try different fits. A little bit longer to print, but still not too much filament used.
