James Abraham Garfield (November 19, 1831 - September 19, 1881) was the 20th President of the United States (March - September 1881), a multi-talented self-taught military leader and Republican Party activist. The only president in US history elected to this position while a member of the US House of Representatives. He was seriously wounded less than four months after taking office and died two and a half months later from the consequences of unsuccessful treatment.
