3D model description

After several months of design and development, we built an excellent 3D printed speaker! This speaker uses Lii Song 3" full range drivers (available from Lii Song website, about $80 per pair), and delivers outstanding sound quality for its size.

The design takes advantage of the 3D printing technology to create a complex single piece speaker enclosure with internal anechoic and reflex port features that would be impossible to make with other methods. The result is a wide dynamic range and bass extension well beyond the capabilities of other small speakers.

Speakers are rated at 30 Watts. They will be loud enough for a room up to about 30-40 square meters.

The speakers are simple in construction - no cross-overs are needed. Besides the drivers, speaker binding posts and approximately 0.5 m of speaker wire is needed. 16G silicone speaker wire is recommended. 8 M4x12mm pan head screws are needed for each speaker to attach the drivers and the binding post cover.

Since the acoustic design of the enclosure was done to match the Lii Song 3" drivers, other drivers are not likely to be suitable. I am working on designs for other drivers - it is a fairly slow process - and I will put them on this website when they have been built, tested and "approved".

3D printing settings

Important! The print volume needs to be at least 220x220x250mm, each print uses approximately 1.3 kg of PLA. 3kg spools are recommended, if using 1 kg spools you will need to swap pot the filament at some point.

Recommended settings:

Material - PLA, 200 deg C, 60 deg bed
Nozzle - 0.4 mm
Layer height - 0.2 mm
Wall, top and bottom thickness 0.8 mm
No supports, print "face down"
Fill - 30% (20 % is okaaay... there might be a little extra resonance on the top of the speaker, not enough to hear but enough to measure)
