Description

New 20 gear model: https://makerworld.com/en/models/153612

I set out to create one of the most versatile, complex, and clean fidget toys to challenge my design and print skills, and because I loved the concept of a 12 gear fidget spinner.

The model includes 49 parts, and functions perfectly if your printer is well dialed in.

The toy can be used in a number of ways. You can manually spin gears in one hand, or between two hands. You can pinch gears to spin the toy around in your hand, or spin the toy with two opposing gears. It's really quite fun, and serves as a good educational toy for kids as well.

Putting it together is simple enough. Each gear has a screw, a washer, and a cap. Pop the screw through the gear, a washer on the back, then screw it into the core of the model. Once you've done that, you can pop the cap onto the gear.

Took some tweaking of the gears in motion but turned out nicely.

Cool print but for me, it’s too tight to spin. My printer is tuned in and it fine on other similar prints.

I think you may have tightened the screws too much. when you tighten them, back then up until the gear spins easily. if you do that for all the gears they should spin together.

This is a fun build. Just was so difficult to get my giant fingers on it in a way to twist it. My kids and wife had no issues. So I took one cap moded it so it had a small finger grip and now it works smooth as butter for me. All my family liked it with the thumb screw knob on it. They said it gave another cool way to use it. Thanks for sharing this.

amazing mod, I'm super glad so many people are enjoying it. Try finding two wheels you can grip between thumb and middle finger, and then spin the whole orb. works better for big hands.

This prints easily, but, the way the screws work, unless I'm totally missing something, these easily get either way too tight, or they come lose. It would be better if the holes and threads in the body was to a length where you can screw in the spinners to bottom out, without locking the cogs. Or make the bolt slightly longer (I'm thinking about 0.5mm - 0.7mm). The license doesn't allow for remixes, but testing a bolt that is ~0.7mm longer works great, and lets you tighten it so hard it will not come lose, yet, the spinners keeps spinning.

hey, I've got a new design with 22 gears that includes an automatic buffer so you can screw down tight without locking the gear. will be out in two days. 👍

Fwiw, this is all I did to the screws, adding a 0.7mm "top", which lets me tighten the screws hard and it'll move perfectly after this (and doesn't come lose).

I spent the better part of today printing this on my A1 mini and it printed perfectly. I wish there was something to hang on to on the top and bottom pot for now. I ended up just sticking a finger in the middle. all and all, it's a wonderful model and it works very well.

Fun to build. Don't overtighten the screws.
