Fully 3d printed parts. Super smooth. No other hardware needed.

Okay, this is designed for MakerWorld Flying objects design contest. I guess I have different thought with flying objects with others, lol.
So, when I trying to get idea and google search something fly, I found the Hopter and it reminds me this childhood toy. Yeah, who does't like a bad axx fly thing that could fly to the roof.

If you have issue with propeller not flying, I upload a printing file for new propeller and gear, just replace those will be fine.

Updated: 12/3/23. mk2.7 Poka-yoke feature added.

Pay attention on placement, don't push propeller too hard on the gear rod.

I added Poka-yoke feature on gear housing now. Simply you can't put the gear housing in opposite direction now.

Only one way to fit now…..

The clerance of gear to gear housing retainer also have been revised tolerance, now it is less wobble. Propeller to gear rod connect mechanism have also updated.

Many tests have been done again:

Check you install orientation, the slot should be on flat side of the handle. OTHER WISE, you are creating downforce while pulling it. For mk2.6.

Disclaimer:

This design consist of moving parts, pinch point, and object that will carry good amount of momentum. By, download and play this toy, you agree that designer is exempt for any injury or property loss caused.

I spend few hour todays and work on the design. Yeah, I usually design fast. So, around 2 hours I guess, the gear part is most ticky to design. Got the rough shape done. Made first print prototype to proof concept. Found a lot of tolenancing issue.
When back to CAD, and same old process of revise, test, another revise.
Until late tonight, got MK 2.4 done. It flys like a charm. It hits my apartment roof easily. I want to try it out door there, but I am too lazy to go out today. I will try it sometimes later, I guess.

Function Instruction: installation

Design breakdown:

So, it is very easy gear driven device. just a gear housing to hold gear and a rack gear to drive the spur gear. I was trying to do gear set to make it spinning faster, but it might end up have a big gear housing so end up did went that route.

Next biggest thing is how do you make the gear move without touching to many object and create a lot of firction during lanuch, the answer is to have smallest contact surface possible. But you also some the gear shaft to be retain without much clerance.

Also consider how to printing the gear, I come up this pin design to retain the gear and work as a shaft. I guess it works great so far.

For the propeller design, you want least weight possible, other wise you ain't got it to fly. At the same time, I want it not going to damage the roof, walls, and maybe your tofu on the plate, who knows. And most important, Kids safe. So The propeller is very thin by deisng. Just it could flex and absorb more force during impact.

All the parts is modular design. So if you damage anything, it should be very easy to replace and quick to print. Any futher update, I will put on the statement, you won't need to reprint the enire damn thing. Sweet. isn't it?

This is still work in progress, come back later, you will see more propeller deisng up. Maybe, If I got enough sleep and have more time, I will get few more propelller up.

Printing Suggestions:

All the parts could print without supprt and brim.

Gears and pin need 35% infill, use at least 3 walls.

I don't know why this old part will be there, if you download raw file and silce yourself, delect this one:

Have fun!

Print was good, but I can’t get it to fly no matter how fast I pull or which direction I pull from. Jave teied many times. Printed a different one similar to this and it flies great.

You install the gear housing cap in wrong orientation........Check the description.

Like this? I’ve tried putting the cap on both ways. I’ve tried pulling from both sides. it still won’t even lift off the stand. I can see which way the propeller should turn to lift, but even when turning that way it doesn’t fly.🤷🏻‍♂️

Was the propeller easy to place on the gear rod? it should be loose fit and should be able to fly on the set up like your new picture.

this is not functional. used your profile on a p1s. the fan is only rotating but does not elevate.

nope, that wasn't the problem. i used your profile to print everything with pla. it assembled nicely but its not working. it feels like it's not rotating fast enough. i can feel that it's creating downforce (wind blowing on my hand). dont know what i did wrong.

I found the issue, Some of the filament will cause propeller to over size on cylinder shape, I tested with other 5 types filament and one of them was having this issue. testing on revision now. It should be able to fix by replace gear and propeller.

not flying here either, proper orientation as well. I can feel it blowing wind on my hand when I pull the handle.

works perfect right off the plate-

I pulled the pull tab, and the propeller only rotated at the base without taking off

is propeller lose on the gear top? did you confirm the top rotate piece is fit in correct orientation? if that top rotate housing installed in reverse orientation, it won't fly. I also confirmed my design model and updated it, shouldn't be tolerancing issue.
