Description

This model will just about print without supports, but the top will end up quite messy, and the lower features on the sphere may also post a spaghetti risk. The one pictured here was done without supports, but I have included the a version with tree supports applied only to the problem areas. To avoid potential failures I would recommend the support version.

Celebrate the year of the dragon with this dragon themed lantern lithophane!

I use some small LED puck lights off amazon, I've linked a couple of pages for them below.

The opening size of the sphere is pretty large though, and you could probably use a variety of different lighting options. This is just what I had available :)

I've made two so far. One the original size and one smaller. I can't get the top to not have missing areas on both prints. I used the support files too but no luck yet. Otherwise, it's pretty neat.

Thanks for the pics! Can I ask what filament you used? for me the issues were isolated to a much smaller radius circle at the top when I printed without supports.

Bambu PLA Gold. Any suggestions you have would be great. I'm going to get it to work. The rest of the sphere is smooth and looks great.

Hmm I've always experienced more oozing with metalic coloured filaments for some reason. You could increase the support enforced area on the inside top and paint a wider circle, since it looks like your problem starts lower down than the supports. I am intending to do some research in how to get hollow spheres to print better, but afraid I don't have any immediate advice because it's a new area for me too!

Happy with the final result. It looks great even with a little thin print issue at the very top. Printed with supports and it still had small gaps at the top of the globe (15 hrs). Might try again with a thickness modifier at the very top. Overall geat project though. Thank you!

Looks good! thanks for printing. At some point when I can find the time I really want to have a play around with spheres in general to get a better understanding of their printability. I had reports of different results depending on filament, and I suspect that the regular bambu settings are a little too hot to allow fast enough cooling. That said I'm sure there are probably structural improvements that could be made to mitigate this sort of thing!

Nice model. It printed easily with supports. My daughter is a huge dragon fan so she loves it!

Why don't you make the bottom fit the bambu LED? Also yes top very messy not sure how to fix that except maybe slow down.

Hi there, I don't have an exact measurement to hand, but its much bigger than 38mm. You could probably print at 50% scale and it would still be bigger. I can try measure later when I get home.

Support Issue:support is stronger than dome
Strength Issue:dome is far too thin to support itself
Other Issues:this wouldnt even need support if it had more walls.
