Description

This is a decorative foldable gift box which you can use to gift small presents, decorate your desk, put under a tiny Christmas tree, store candies, and whatever you can think of. This design features a box base and a lid that fit together. I designed it so that it requires no glue, tape or screws; minimal purge waste to print; different designs to choose from; and two sizes, the smaller one being able to fit on an A1 mini. It uses a single layer thin living plastic hinges and tabs that allow you to fold and snap it together to a sturdy box (as sturdy as a thin layer of plastic that is) and is surprisingly strong! Since it prints flat and folds up, the designs can come from Hueforge and only requires multicolor filament changes at layers which significantly reduces purge waste! This also means that an AMS is not required but is helpful. Unfortunately, the sizes are a bit small as you can only fit so much of a foldable design on the print bed.

Sizes (interior volume):

  • Normal (Printable on X1C, P1S, P1P, A1): 7.5cm x 7.5cm x 7.5cm (2.95 in x 2.95 in x 2.95 in)
  • Small (Printable on X1C, P1S, P1P, A1, A1mini): 5cm x 5 cm x 5cm (1.96 in x 1.96 in x 1.96 in)

Print instructions:

  • Designs are separated by profiles, each pattern has two versions. One for the X1, P1, A1 printers, and one for the A1mini. The A1mini can only fit the small size while the X1, P1, A1 versions have both sizes! Read the description carefully and select the correct design you want. Make also sure to select the correct plates of the size you are interested in.
  • If you have an AMS, use only the AMS plates in the profiles! If you don't have an AMS, use the pause swap plates. When using the pause swap plates, it will pause at the color changes. Simply unload and load a new color filament and resume the print. The profile description has a description of the order of colors so make sure to read them.
  • All you need to do is decide on a pattern to print, then select my appropriate profile. Afterwards choose what plate you want to print, each plate will have a different part, size, and AMS requirement. Do not increase the number of copies as it will auto rotate the models which may cause the living hinges to fail.
  • Tolerances are tight for this model due to the living hinges. Please make sure that your printer can handle a 0.15mm gap. Otherwise it may be a bit difficult to bend the hinges or it may fuse together.
  • Make sure that your first layer bed adhesion is good, the living hinges are on the first layer and any first layer defect may affect the bend-ability.
  • Check back every now and then, I will be updating this box with more designs as I test and print them!

Assembly Instructions

When removing your print from the print bed, please be gentle and slow. The living hinges are thin and can be torn off if you aggressively remove the print. If using a textured or hot plate, please wait for the plate to cool completely first before removal. If using a plate with high adhesion where you need to peel or pry it off because bending the plate doesn’t work, consider using a medium for easy release like a glue stick or hair spray. Please see documentation for bigger versions of these pictures.

Any color you want.

Note the model differences:

  • Basic Box has a wall thickness of the base at 2mm as all lids are designed to fit on a box that size.
  • Basic SLIM box has a lip of 2mm for the lid and the rest of the walls are 1mm for your remixing or sticker needs, choose that one if you want to add some depth to your box.
  • All lids are 1mm thick in this set, as nothing requires them to be thicker.
  • Keep in mind how it bends when adding details to the 3d model.

Want to slice these files yourself?

While I recommend you use the profiles I have prepared and tested, you can slice it yourself if you follow these recommendations:

  • For all projects, make sure to print at 100% infill, it is thin enough that having sparse infill can cause surface defects with a minor reduction in filament used which is not worth it.
  • For all projects, the first layer must be 0.2mm thick, the living hinges are designed based on that thickness.
  • For any boxes that include Hueforge designs, please print layer height of 0.1mm with a base layer of 0.2mm.
  • Do not rotate the files or change the first layer infill pattern, the infill pattern must be 45 degrees to the walls of the model to allow the thin living hinge design to work well.
  • I do not recommend scaling the model, it has tight tolerances on the living hinge and Hueforge designs are optimized at a specific scale.

LOVE IT!! super easy to make, this is an amazing design. We wanted bows for the top so we used this Ribbon bow from: https://makerworld.com/en/models/69205#profileId-73470 Just had to drill a small hole in the lid and a drop of super glue to hold it. The green and white one is my favorite. I'd love to have just a plain box though too! please?

Your filament choices are great and they look so aesthetically pleasing! Thank you for giving my model a shot. I will be uploading a blank one in the upcoming days when I have time.

Photos dump! These are amazing. I had no blue so I had to improvise. Love the starry night one so much in all colours (I'm the guy who previously printed one with wood pla)

Very nice colors! It seems like starry night works well with most colors!

It really does. I will print other colour combos as I get other filaments. Do you plan or releasing any new designs by the way? :)

I do plan on releasing more designs! I want to say that I will release more before new years, but holiday seasons always tend to be busy for me. But for sure there will be more designs in the future, I try to release them in groups of 4 as I test each one.

Beautiful. Printed well (spiral one, small on A1 mini - using Black PLA and Hatchbox Wood PLA). Assembled effortlessly even though I was a worried about breaking the little flaps, but they were solid! Amazing models!! One question, could these be printed upside down to get that lovely first layer squeezeout look on the outward-facing side, or would that not work with the thin living hinge? Maybe I will try printing upside down and report back :) One more thought, if the aboe is not possible, could we try ironing the "all top layers" - is that something you tested or have suggestions for? It would certainly improve the look. I will be printing a lot more of these in different patterns and colours, they are amazing!! 7/5 score model :)

Hello Macjabko, thanks for trying out my print! I don't recommend printing it upside down, because most of the designs will have floating layers as it has different thicknesses for the designs. The living hinges will probably not work in that case either since they are designed to work as a first layer and a lot of the flaps will be floating 1.8mm in the air if you flip it! If you are having issues with the top layer, I recommend you try the following first before using ironing (never used that feature honestly) - First, do a manual flow rate calibration till you get a flow rate that you like the look and feel of: https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/software/bambu-studio/calibration_flow_rate, your picture indicates to me that your flow rate could use a bit of tweaking - If when printing after flow calibration you still have imperfect top layers, consider changing the top layer only pattern in your slicer from monotonic line to something like concentric and give it a shot Then give ironing a shot and see if that helps. Hopefully this will help with making the top layers smoother for you!

Thanks for the reply and advice. My flow rate likely needs tweaking for the wood pla indeed, but in this case I think it's down to the nature of the material itself containing wood bits, it prints not as smoothly :) I did not expect it to come out any better anyway, I will post some pictures with different settings and filaments, black and wood is all I had on hand at the moment, but got the Christmas bambu pack today.

Ohhh its wood pla, maybe it sands well with a touch of sand paper? Still, I look forward to seeing how the other colors come out!

Spectacular! What CAD software did you use? Thank you!

Hey SWElite, CAD software shouldn't really matter as long as you can model stuff and export to STL. I personally use Rhinoceros 3D as I am familiar with that program, but fusion360 is free for personal use and a lot better in many aspects. I only used this to make the base and the simple designed boxes. The software I used for making the designs on the more intricate boxes like the starry night one is Hueforge, that may be the one you are looking for.
