Description

Here are my 4 x 6 lithophane boxes!

 

There is one in landscape and one in portrait and they are designed to fit a lithophane with a 4mm thick frame.

 

In the file, you'll find all of the parts with the settings that worked for me. There are four different diffusers to allow you to adjust the brightness of the lithophanes. If you are using a color lithophane, I suggest using the open diffuser for the best results. For traditional lithophanes, you will probably want to use one of the other diffusers.

They don't have to be these specific ones, but they do need to have the same dimensions (2.7" x 1")

 

Printing:

The boxes should print well with the settings I provide. If you do not have PLA support material you can substitute PETG, but you will need a good bit of flushing to prevent issues. If you don't have either of those, the settings should still work but it may be harder to remove the supports.

Assembly:

It's pretty simple really. Place you desired diffuser in the back of the box, then drop in the puck light. Next you just need to add the back spacer (it has the I/O symbol), then just screw on the rear cap. Finally, slide your lithophane into the slot and you're done!

Operation:

Simply push on the back of the lithophane box to turn you light on or off!

Notes:

The slots for both frames should be at the bottom. There is a small catch that will hold the lithophane in place. Gently lift it while sliding the lithophane into the box, but be careful that you don't pull too hard and split the box. This should only be an issue if you are using a silk filament. If the threads are a little tight, try adding a very small amount of lithium grease at the top of the threads on the box, then carefully work the threads back and forth until you get the cap flush to the body. If your lights come with a self-adhesive backing, you can attach the rear spacer to the light. Also, you may be able to make them a little brighter still by adding some foil tape to the inside faces of the boxes.

 

I have also included a plate with 4" x 6" border that will allow you to add a 4mm frame to your color lithophanes. When you create you lithophane on https://lithophanemaker.com/index.html, make sure you set the size of the lithophane to 151.4 x 100.9. This will allow you a little wiggle room when you add the generated files to the frame border. Also, make sure you assemble the parts before slicing.

EDIT:

3/14/24 - Just a small update to the file because I replaced the frame models with .step files.  That should get rid of the ghost polygons that would sometimes show up depending on the material.

a bit new to this and unsure how to set up the frame. any advice?

You should be able to just slice and print any plate if you are using a Bambu Lab printer and Bambu Studio. If you don't have any PLA support material, just change the interface material to default and set the "Top Z Distance" to 0.2mm. If you need help with the lithophane itself, use the dimensions I list in the description when you upload your picture to LithophaneMaker.com. Did that help, or is it something more specific?

Thank you for the advice, I have a Bambu and support material. 👍🏻I was unsure on the frame aspect part of the litho, there is a frame only option I was going to try if I didn’t hear back from you. Thanks again

very good design and everything prints as it should. My question is what’s the frame piece for? Does it somehow help hold the litho? My litho fits but seems to be too thin and falls out when moving the holder. maybe because I printed the litho with no border?
