Description

I’ve been wanting one of these extremely rare German made mid-century mantle clocks but they are really difficult to find and when you do find them they go for $1,000 - $2,500. So I decided to try and 3D print a replica. While not perfect, I like how it turned out.

Printed on p1p. For fake wood appearance I did some sanding, then automotive body filler/primer. Then light brown colored spray paint with dark wood stain brushed on for the final coat.

For the face of the clock, use ironing to make for a smoother finish. For the clock body, use adaptive layer hight for best results.

I used a cheap clock movement from walmart as the clock internals. It's a 1/4 in (.63 cm) shaft and a 2.5 in (5.71 cm) housing. The clock movement come with second, min, an hour hands but I discarded those and designed min and hour hands that press fit onto the shaft of the clock movement.

The small dots are decoration that press fit into the face of the clock. Same for the narrow strips. You'll need to trim these down to size as you press fit them into the clock. If they are too tight you can play with scaling them down slightly.

The original clock had 3 ports used for setting the time and winding the movement. I've included them here has decoration only. Easiest to press fit these in from the back of the face.

For the legs, you can place them by eye or do some measuring to get them in the same location on the bottom of the clock body. I may add registration holes at some point.

-Love the included .STEP files! -Love the practical assembly features you added! -Do Not love the changes to the shape, its lost its elegance (IMO) and does not match the original now :( Green shows the original shape before your remix.

Yes I am printing a modified version of the wood grain remix. My comment is more a question as to why the move from the original shape?

I'm still not sure what you are asking. Are you asking why the wood grain remix differs from my original model? Or are you asking why my model differs from the original Welby clock? I can't speak to the remixes... But for my original I used Adobbe Illustrator to trace the profile using images of the original clock like the one you posted. I'm sure it's not perfect but it was close. With 2000+ downloads and dozens of makes between here and printables, it would seem many people are okay with it despite it's flaws. Feel free to model and upload a more accurate version if you feel so inclined.

Used shelf paper to wrap it for wood look. Originally I planned to try and use actually walnut veneer but its expensive and hard to find apparently where I am. I may look into that again in the future. I didn't like the trimming pieces so I made a new model of the brass accents using a negative impression of the face plate. it has no tolerance so I used wood clamps to press them in. I used brass metal PLA from CCTREE. Great model 👌

I used the remixed inserts, but printed great. A little figuring to get placements right but overall quite happy. Thanks!

Worked great for me with the default profile. I took some liberties with colors and the final orientation, but it’s basically the same thing. :-)

Printed using wood filament. Did some light sanding then wiped with a gel stain.

This is a great model. Fantastic work! The poster's original photograph has a small button on the front of the clock movement that looks to be printed as well. Can you share it if possible?

That button part came with my clock movement and is not 3D printed. Great build, thanks for the rating!
