Description

Update 3/1/24.

Added optional below water part of ship plus improved photos.

Below water parts are printed separately in 2 separate print profiles, one for the hull part itself and then one for the really small parts like propellors.

Hull can be fixed to main body of the ship from the bottom using 2 to 4 M2x8 cap head bolts (or glue).

Rear propellor and motor units are then pushed into the back of the hull using a small screwdriver,

with front bow thruster propellors slotted in from the top of the hull part and stabilisers also pushed in.

Multi colour version of P&O Cruises Arvia scaled down to 1:1000 in order to allow it to print on a single build plate.

--------

Notes for main part of ship.

Arvia is P&O Cruises newest and joint largest ship that was launched in Dec 2022 and the only that I have modelled so far that I haven't yet sailed on.

As I had to scale down the model to 99% to get it to fit onto the build plate it is actually techniquely 1:1010

A print profile that also includes P&O Cruises other ‘Excellence class' ship Iona is also included - as printing to two ships at the same time is more efficient in terms of overall print time and waste if you don't mind slotting Iona back together.

Some minor support structures have been included within the model - see yellow and red colour coding in the pictures below in order to allow them to print without slicer supports. (Pictures are actually of Iona - but the support structure is almost identical).

I think it is ok to leave the yellow colour coded supports in place permanently - but I would recommend snipping off the red coded supports if you want to make the ship a little bit more authentic.

Prints in about 28hrs on a Bambu Lab X1C 0.4mm nozzle, 0.2mm layer height.

Only one test print of this ship has been done - and it was printed at the same time as its Sister ship Iona in order to save overall print time and waste.

Before attempting this print I would recommend trying a single colour version first in order to check that the print works ok for you.

Filament for the test prints was sponsored by Bambu Lab.

The print really needs 11 colours - and ideally 3 AMS units - however it is probably possible to use 2 AMSs - with some mid print colour swaps within the AMS units - as for example Orange is only used for the life boats which are relatively low down, and yellow doesn't start to be used until quite high in the model. Also black is only used in the top few layers.

Recommended filaments to use for the print are:

Bambu Lab PLA Matte Marine Blue

Bambu Lab PLA Basic Black

Bambu Lab PLA Basic Orange

Bambu Lab PLA Basic Dark Green

Bambu Lab Matte Grass Green (HEX Code #61C680)

Bambu Lab Iridium Gold Metallic (HEX Code #B39B84)

Bambu Lab Matte Ivory White (HEX Code #FFFFFF).

Bambu LAB PLA Silver (HEX Code #A6A9AA)

Bambu Lab PLA Basic Blue (HEX Code #00358E)

Bambu Lab PLA Basic Yellow

Bambu Lab PLA Basic Red (COOD1E)

an incredible amount of detail. gotta make sure to keep an eye on any filament poop getting tangled up and not going down the poop chute. but the ship itself was incredible. I switched up the colors to just use 4 colors in my single AMS: white, gray, red, and light blue and it looks great.

Thanks - yes it does create a huge pile of waste - I have got caught out a couple of times not emptying my external purge container quick enough - so that it piles up and eventually causes the printer to stop. For my smaller less colours Azura model tried a different technique using purge-to objects.

Judy, That print came out really well - Pictures look great - almost like Renders. I didn't really expect these ships to print ok at 1:1000 - which is why I started off with the complicated multi part 1:500 models - but they came out better than I expected. Really like the presentation of the cat holding up the ship too. By coincidence that cat is a bit similar to Emma Cruises Mercy Ships Charity cat that I have included for scale and interest in a few of my published pictures including for example the attached one of Arvia 1:250,1:500 and Ventura 1:1000. Would you have any objections if I shared the first 2 pictures with the cat with Emma Cruises on her Facebook group as she might enjoy them? Background info here: https://www.mercyships.org.uk/emma-cruises-transforming-lives/ Also is the cat 3d printed too - and if so is it available somewhere on Makerworld as I would like to print it myself too. Dave Wood Edit: Added a some more photos I just took to illustrate the point (this time with the 1:1000 model) - can't quite get the same pose of yours though;)

Hi Dave, Of course you can share these photos. This cat model is not currently on the makerworld website, and my friend just gave me this cat, which I thought was very interesting, and even more so that he can actually lift the boat! Amazing ! This cat is called Qualia Cat, Japanese brand cat.

Such a fun print. To be a huge fan of crusing, ship models, and then to be able to watch this ship print before your eyes was mind blowing. Thanks for such a great design!

Thanks, and really like your purge-to object - and thinking of including some suggested good partner objects like that in future releases.

Thanks - will almost certainly do one of the Carnival versions of this ship at some point. Probably Mardi Gras as I like the name.

That would be absolutely fabulous!!! I am already currently printing the Arvia for a friend who I know will appreciate it, as he also lives in the UK, and is involved with CCL. But I would insanely love to be able to print a Mardi Gras for myself. We had the pleasure of sailing on her right after covid restrictions lifted. Amazing ships!
