Description

For your tree trimming this year, here is a set of four spinning Christmas ornaments. The rings spin freely around familiar Christmas scenes: an evergreen tree, an angel, a snowman, and a cozy house.

  • No AMS needed for multi-colour rings; they can be printed separately! Mix and match colours to your heart's content!
  • All ornaments are AMS ready and pre-painted
  • Solid colour versions are included as well and look just as good!

Trouble? Questions? Comments? Please don't hesitate to get in touch!

Merry Christmas!

Printing Tips

  • Print Settings: My print profiles contain all my recommended settings (see below for more detail) as well as plates for:
    • Full multicolour ornaments and rings
    • Separate multicolour scenes
    • Separate solid colour scenes
    • Separate Ring sets
  • Filament: The ornaments look nicest when printed with Silk or Sparkle filaments (see About the Model below for brands/colours that I used)
  • Purge volumes: I've calibrated them to reduce waste, but you may need to recalculate for your own filament
  • Plate: A textured plate is recommended because of the texture it gives to the bottom of the ornaments. Be sure your plate is extra clean to ensure success because the rings have a small footprint.
  • Ironing: ironing makes the top surface look nicer but can add a lot of time to the print. Feel free to experiment with it if you'd like a better top finish.

Separating the Rings

Separate the rings by rotating the ring (or scene) perpendicular to the rest of the ornament. Grab the edge and gently pull down. It should flex and release from the retaining hole at the top. To combine the rings, simply reverse the process.

Print Settings

  • Elephant foot compensation: 0 (it helps the rings stick better because they already have a narrow footprint)
  • Wall loops: 4 (to make stronger rings surface)
  • Detect thin walls: On (fills in better)
  • First layer speed: 15 mm/s (helps things stick better and not be dragged)
  • Brim: none

About the Model

There's something magical about print-in-place models. Many a time I've shown someone a box with a hinge and they were amazed. “What do you mean it was printed in one piece?!?” Since I also love Christmas, I thought I would combine the two types of magic and create a kinetic ornament.

Filament used in display models:

  • Red Silk PLA (Hello3D)
  • Jade Green Silk PLA (CC3D)
  • Glorious Gold (Spectrum)
  • White Silk (Hello3D)

The green bled into lighter colors. The ornaments look amazing and the tolerances were perfect. The rings rotate great!

Thank you very much for posting your make and your kind words! Regretfully, I cannot control how Bambu slices colours. The bleed through is because Studio put it there. If I could fix it, I would! Hopefully they update their slicer in the future to give more control over such things. Otherwise, certain filaments will show bleed through more than others depending on how translucent they are. Thanks again and happy holidays!

Hey, thanks for the kind words! Though I suspect it was more for the printer than my design, lol! These printers are amazing, aren't they? Anyways, I'm glad it's working for you and that my model printed well. I love the silk copper that you used. Very beautiful! I hope you have a Merry Christmas and continue to enjoy the P1P :)

Thank you for rating and posting your make! It looks really good in those colours :) Oh, and if you wanted to take care of the stringies, a careful (and quick) blast with a heat gun or a hair dryer on high should make them disappear. Thanks again!

I love the idea! but because the parts are into other parts there is a lot of bleed through. Yes, i could use darker colors but that defeats the purpose of bright Christmas colors. This happens on all 4 scenes. I Played with bambu studio and painting for over an hr, but there is no way to fix it in studio with the current color scheme. I hate rating someone's hard work so low, especially when it appears that so many people had good luck, but I did not.

Hi @dohara1985. Thank you for rating and providing information about your difficulties. Regretfully, this isn't the fault of the model but rather of Bambu Studio itself. It is just how it "sees" the model and how it interprets how much of the colour goes where. It's unpredictable and unfortunately, cannot be changed. Additionally, the different areas of the model aren't separate entities combined into a multi-part model and then coloured. It's all one mesh. Bambu paints things in weird and sometimes not wonderful ways. Combine that with white as the covering colour, and bleed through is very noticeable. That said, the colouring of the angel was incorrect in my profiles. The dress should have been gold as it covers up the bleed through. I've updated both print profiles with the correct colours. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about Mr. Snowman unless I also paint him gold. Hopefully this helps explain the situation and that perhaps you would consider changing your rating as it's regretfully something that's out of my control.
