Description

Disclaimer: I have not printed this model yet myself, as I still have the original sperical chess board and no white filament right now.

Spherical Chess Board (metric) - single multicolour print

This is a new version of the spherical chess board design by DaveMakesStuff on thingiverse which i remixed a while back to work with metric magnets.

In this redesign, I made the entire board from scratch instead of modifying the original files like I did last time. This allowed me to make change the way the pieces fit together to eliminate any gaps. This means that you are able to print the entire board as a single piece (best in multiple colours).

I made two versions, one that is approximately the size of the original, and a larger version if you want it.

Printing

I assembled all parts for the board together during design and exported them as a single STEP-File, which allows you to import the model as an assembly and do a single multicolour print from BambuStudio (or similar slicers). For this purpose, a BambuStudio .3mf file is included for each version, which already have the multiple colour settings ready. I designed the board so that the base can be printed in a different colour from the black and white tiles.

The .3mf files consist of two plates with per-plate printing settings: The first plate with the board should be printed with tree supports and layer by layer, while the second plate with the pieces should be printed without supports and by object (set of pieces).

Due to this specific purpose, the tiles themselves are not good for standalone printing (no flat bottom), which is why I've only provided the assembled step-file. If you do not have access to a multicolour printer, consider printing my original metric remix or the original imperial version.

Technical Specs

The holes for the magnets in the new version are still designed at 3.2mm to fit 3mm diameter magnets. They are 1.2-1.5mm deep.

Assembly

Assembling the board requires 96 3mm diameter by 1mm magnets that you need to glue into the board-tiles (64) and playing pieces (32) (pay attention to the polarity!).

Playing Pieces compatibility

The board still works with the same Chess pieces that I originally remixed for the first metric version. Any other pieces with holes for magnets in the bottom will also work.

Other versions

If you wish to print this with differently sized magnets, please leave a comment with their size and I'll do my best to provide a version accomodating your idea :)
