Star Trek Enterprise NCC-1701 Coaster
UPDATE 2023-10-31 - Include a “coaster holder” in the model files and the updated print profile with the additional plate. See photos.
Print in two parts - the bottom and the rim. When complete, flip the base over so the bottom is facing up and fit the rim tabs into the slots, wiggling it into place a little bit at a time until it is seated.
Printing in two parts allows the surface finish to be better by using the bottom as the top surface, which when combined with the Textured PEI Plate results in a really nice finish (see photos).
I'm only using two colors, blue and white, but of course you can change that. Each color is a separte object in the single STEP or STL files. I didn't “paint”, but instead selected each part and changed it to use the desired filament from the AMS.
Be sure and print the “rim” upside down so that the tabs are pointing up.
After printing, flip the base over so the surface texture from the plate is facing up, then fit the rim onto the base. It should fit nicely with a friction fit, aligning and wiggling all the tabs in a little bit at a time until seated. A few drops of superglue near the notches is optional, but I have found that it is not necessary because the friction fit seems to hold well for me.
I have included two plates in the 3MF file, one for a single coaster and one for two at a time.
If you print the STEP file or the STL file instead of starting with the 3MF file, note that these are single files with multiple object, each object is “colorable”. To print the rim separately, select the “object”, then select “Split into Objects”, then select the “rim” portion and drag it away from the rest and flip the rim upside down for printing. Color each object as you desire, then select all the objects of the model except the rim,ctrl-click your selection and select “Assemble” to treat them as a group, then position on the bed where you want.
