Description

This is a remix of the great toy bear trap, TRAP! by IdeaBeansNZ. There were a few improvements that could be made to it, however, and a couple of people made them: improved springs that are stronger and require no support by MacGuyver and the jaw fix that allows both jaws to stay flat when the trap is set by sthone. I've included all of these improvements, plus a couple of others that I made myself:

  • Improved (v3) jaws that close up easily when the trap is tripped. Tapered teeth allow the jaws to close all the way without binding.
  • Improved (v2) clips that hold onto the shackles (u-bolts) much better. They tended to pop off when the trap was tripped.

I used BBL Tough PLA for all of the parts. The springs seem to work well enough with this material. Time will tell if they will last. I'll have the kids do a durability test on it. The only glue required is to attach the trigger pad to its lever. A drill bit may be needed to clean up some of the pivot holes.

15-FEB-2024 UPDATE: Added assembly instructions PDF

17-FEB-2024 UPDATE: Added “Less Sharp” versions of the jaws and removed the originals based on feedback from makers

18-MAR-2024 UPDATE: Added a “no teeth” version of the jaws to make it safer for little kids as requested by brizzlejr. These can be found in the “No Teeth” print profile and in the Raw Files as STLs. Also added photos of the trap with these jaws (the red ones).

is there anyway you can make the jaws without teeth on them? normal traps dont use teeth these days and something like this would be fantastic for teaching kids how to trap safely

That's not a bad idea. I'll go ahead and work on that.

this is a solid design. was a lot ofnfun setting up. the holes needed to be hollowed out more to make everything fit.

Bear trap worked well. I did have to make the holes wider to fit the pins.

agree that the pins are a couple micrometers too thick. As printed, my pins caused too much friction for it to release. Will probably reprint at 99 or 98%. Really cool design though and will clearly work when the pins have a little more play. Additions that are described are appreciated.

small pieces and pins required some cleanup to fit holes, but overall it is a great model
