Description

Here shows my own design, the Aurora, or 极光. It's an incredibly cool FPV cruiser that offers high speed and agility.

The design of Aurora is inspired by the IJN J7W Shinden and XP-55, with the addition of modern aircraft elements.

Including full-span canard, strakes (although they serve mostly as decorative elements), and winglets.

It comes with a servo gimbal (included in this model, remix from FLY_101) and cooling system for the DJI O3. So great if you wish to use a headtracker on it.

The flying speed is fast, with a cruising speed of 70kph (20m/s), and it can easily reach 100-130kph, pulling 3-4g maneuvers. A large area is required for flying, and it is completely unsuitable for park flying. When the flying speed exceeds 100kph, noticeable vibrations occur in the gimbal, severely affecting the flying experience, necessitating targeted optimization in the design.

Here are some basic details:

  • Wing Span: 1030mm
  • Weight (4s 18650, no gimbal & FPV system): ~1000g
  • Weight (with 4s18650 battery, with gimbal & FPV system): 1170g
  • Estimated endurance time: 30-45 minutes (theoretically, still testing)
  • Cruising speed: 20m/s-30m/s, 70km/h to 110km/h

Tested avionics:

  • Flight Controller: SpeedBee F405 Wing with BZ182 GPS.
  • ESC: Any 30A ESC is OK
  • FPV system: DJI O3
  • Servo: Kingmax KM0940MD*4 (for flight control), and GDW DS014MG*2, 280deg/180deg (for servo gimbal)
  • Motor: SunnySky X2216 KV1400
  • Propeller: APC/Gemfan 8*6-9*6, this may push you to 100kph or faster.
  • Battery: Sony VTC6 18650 4s1p

Extra components:

  • Carbon fiber pole:
    • 2*6x4x550
    • 1*6x4x585
    • 1*6x4x935
    • 3*3x250
    • 1*3x150

Four 6mm (diameter) x3mm (height) magnets for battery and flight controller canopy.

The core design concept of Aurora includes:

  • Appealing aesthetics
  • Decent endurance time
  • Relatively high speed.

Printing

Suggest print material:

Fusrock/Bambu PLA Aero.

I use Bambu PLA-Aero white for Wing, and FuskRock Gray PLA Aero for Fuselage. Use PLA-Aero from two manufacturer just because colors.

BE CAREFUL GO SETUP CORRECT PRINTING SETTINGS FOR FILAMENTS!

Default setting is for PLA-Aero, change it according to your own filaments. Strongly suggest print Aurora with PLA-Aero.

3D printer

Tested on Bambu Lab X1CC, suggest Bambu Machines with size=256mm

Print profiles:

Fuselage, wings and extra component are placed in different print profiles. They have different slice settings.

Gimbal system of Aurora is remix from https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6193480 by FLY_101.

You may also use this gimbal on Aurora

Center of Gravity

Flight with current CG setup (the CG icon) is too stable. You may try the following CG at read line, this is optimal CG point according to my latest CFD results and flight test.

Build Logs

Build logs (in Chinese) for Aurora is available on my notion site, this contains every detail you may want to know about Aurora.

Update since upload

2023/12/21: Update to integrated vertical tail and rudder: do not need manually install hinge. I put the old design of vertial tail in supported files.

2023/12/23: Missing fuselage part is added to fuselage.3MF. Servo gimbal is also added to extras.3MF with original author's approval.

Some details

More details will be adding later.

I'm missing a plate or file. I downloaded the fuselage plates, but I don't see the wing or rudder or canard. Do I need to down load the .stl files for them

I uploaded multiple printing profile in same page in makerworld. The wings and canard are in second printing profile (wings) and some extras are in third (extras) Please check carefully to find them! Thanks for your support again!

I need a help with the aero-lite pla settings. The nose cone was great. middle fuselage print stringy outer wall bumps. Hard material to dial in.

One thing you can do is use the auto-calibration/manual calibration function in Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer. This works for me https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/software/bambu-studio/calibration_flow_rate And I am not familiar with this material, so you need to have some tuning on temperature and flow rate. Usually start from manufacturer’s suggestion or from auto/manual calibration. The correct combination of temp with flow rate is the key. And yes, even after careful tuning, the printed part with PLA-Aero usually do not have such good quality compare to regular PLA, even with Bambu printers. So use your knife if you really care about the out wall quality. For the infill, any tuning won’t make it perfect. Just make sure you have good enough out wall is ok. I’ve test Fusrock and Bambu Lab Pla-aero. They both work fine.

would it fly ok with non-Aero PLA?

Well, regular PLA has been tested with small battery and without FPV system, but you may need real care about the airspeed.

what program did you use for cfd? it helped you find the cg? I’m interested in this process

I am using Solidworks for CFD And yes, I find CG with XFlr5 and CFD. Initial neutral point (NP) is found by using XFLR 5 and use CFD to correct the predictions ( the stoke is not easy to model with XFLr5). Luckily, xflr5 and CFD have similar results on the prediction of NP. The CG is near 15% MAC before neutral point. If you are interesting in the process, I may release the code of finding neutral point use CFD results.

How exactly do you connect the control surfaces i.e. ailerons to the wing? Did you just glue hinges onto them? Also the aileron piece farthest from the fuselage is it supposed to function as a set of flaps since it doesn't have a printed hole for a servo linkage? And also do you have instructions for how to put together the gimble for the fpv camera?

For ailerons, use 3*250 carbon fiber pole to connect it on the wing. I have no idea what does it means when you mention “farthest piece”. I have only one aileron for each side of wing. For FPV camera, you may refer to the original link to view the assembly. I will also put some image here. The assembly is very easy.

Where would i be able to get the carbon fiber rods im having a hard time finding the 6x4mm

Well I buy it from taobao. You may get it from aliexpres i think note: 6x4mm means outter diameter 6mm and inner diameter 4mm, using 6x4 6x5 6x3 etc is also fine.

您好,请问为什么当初没有设计起落架,感觉手抛飞机以及降落都会比较危险

原因很简单,因为深圳附近没有硬化跑道可以用起落架滑跑起降…

Currently no, I haven't got enough time to make a guide or video. But it's not hard to build it, everything is intuitive.
