Description

This is the best side spool holder, I think. I hope I am correct. It features:

  • Improved roller assembly that prevents the spool from riding off the roller
  • Better rigidity thanks to a stiffening rib
  • Simple installation and removal of roller if needed
  • Threads for a PC4-M10 fitting that holds the PTFE tube securely, so you can push on the filament as needed when loading
  • Clearance around the bearing inner races so they don’t rub and cause friction
  • It looks good. :)

Parts needed for this installation:

Please note: The spool roller uses variable layer height to achieve a clean print with the steep overhang angle at the top. This is critical for success in printing the roller properly. If you use your own settings and don’t want to use variable layer height, be sure to print the roller with .1mm layers.

Also note: Please use the smooth sheet to print this. It may not have enough adhesion with the textured bed unless you add a healthy brim.

No supports are required for the filament guide and the spool holder. The roller should be printed upright and supports should be enabled for the print bed only.

The filament guide and spool holder should be printed with 100% infill to maximize rigidity. The roller can be printed almost any way you want (except for the note about layer height above) but my settings are a good starting point.

I hope you like my spool holder. If you leave a comment below, and there is something you don’t like, please mention how you would improve it.

Happy Printing!

I changed the part for the bearings as I didn't had any and needed a side spool holder. Prints well and I'm happy. Thanks.

It was not my intention to make the changes public, but as some requested I made a remix with the necessary info and print profile. You can find it here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/123466#profileId-133015 All credits to 'kenkamm' who made this amazing spool holder!

Everything printed great except the top of the spool. I didn't change any settings. P1S using Banbu Basic PLA. After the 1st one I tried changing the layer height to .1mm and even tried one with support. still getting issues on the overhang. and ideas?

Printed -mostly- well, I had some odd crunching on one edge, but it didn't impede functionality. Needs 2x M3x12mm for the filament guide and 2x M3x16mm for the spool holder.

Really great side holder, came out perfect with esun pla+ black ! My first ''functional print'' for the X1C. Maybe you could link to a M10 double sided adapter in your post?, just for the newbies ;), i used the one from Project-FDM.

Great design, I made a few changes to the infill. I prefer cubic or gyroid. I learned a few things from this file too. Didn't realize each object could have it's own properties on the same plate. Very nice and since my AMS is coming this week, I'd rather not have to reach around to an area I won't be able to get to easily.

What a god send. The print quality came out amazing & makes it so much more easier to change filaments. After purchasing the P1S I knew I had to be the second print 👌🏽

Great design, works perfectly so much easier to use than the original rear one supplied with printer. Print profile was spot on, I used Inland Tough PLA and it printed just fine with no changes to the profile. Thanks for sharing.
