How to Achieve 6 Color Prints With Only 4 Colors Of Filament

Method:

If you look at Santa's nose it appears pink, but I did not use any pink filament. Similarly, Santa's boots appear to be gray or silver, but I did not use any gray filament.

By carefully layering various colors of filament with white and black we can achieve different hues in the same color family. In the case of Santa's nose I used one 0.2mm layer of white filament with two layers of red behind it. As the white filament is fairly translucent, we can see the red through the white filament giving it a pink appearance. A similar method is used to achieve the gray color of Santa's boots. Hueforge is built entirely around this principal, and is a much more advanced version of this same idea.

Print Instructions:

Print face down on the build plate.

Print at 0.2mm layer height

DO NOT change the layer height. The color blending may not work at different layer heights

Colors used in the print:

  • IIIDMax Red
  • IIIDMax Tan
  • Bambu Basic White
  • Generic PLA Black

-----

Be careful using other print profiles than the one provided. The layer height is imperative to achieve the 6 color effect. I had to slow down the first layer and tweak a few things in order to get the first layer to adhere well. The individual ‘pixels’ are quite small and unless your filament is dry and well tuned, you may have issues with the first layer. I also HIGHLY recommend using a textured PEI plate for the best surface finish and better adhesion.

I didn't abide by the instructions and scaled it improperly. That's why mine is noseless. I re-read after and realized i'd gotten distracted and scaled it improperly.
