Megalodon

The Megalodon was a species of prehistoric shark that lived between 23 and 3.6 million years ago, during the Cenozoic era. Its jaw is one of its most impressive features. Scientists estimate that Megalodon was the largest marine predator of all time, reaching a size that could exceed 20 meters in length.

The Megalodon's jaw was massive, with triangular, serrated teeth up to 18 centimetres long. These teeth were designed to slice the flesh of prey, mainly marine mammals such as whales. Megalodon teeth are often found fossilized, and have been essential in determining the size and structure of this ancient predator.

Although many Megalodon teeth have been discovered, complete skeletons of these creatures are extremely rare. This is because shark skeletons are mainly composed of cartilage, a substance that decomposes faster than bone. As a result, only a few teeth, vertebrae and other parts of the Megalodon skeleton have been preserved as fossils.

Most of what we know about Megalodon comes from studying these fossilized teeth, as well as from comparison with modern sharks and other related fossils. Scientists are using techniques such as computer modeling and magnetic resonance imaging to reconstruct Megalodon's appearance and behavior based on the available fossil evidence. Although many mysteries remain about the life of this prehistoric creature, its impact as a major predator of the ancient oceans is undeniable.
