Description

I draw. A lot. You can see my art on Instagram: @matthewjschultz or on my website: https://mjs.art

As part of my artistic process, I create a lot of custom drawing stencils. I design them for my use, but I've received a lot of interest, so I'm making them downloadable.

I like dot grids but I want to be able to erase any visible/unused dot from the final artwork, so I created this stencil.

The stencil is 4" x 6" x 0.03125" because I do a lot of drawings at this size and my Prusa Mini+ has a small build plate. This works for me, but if you want/need something larger, feel free to remix it. Alternatively, you can also just move the stencil to an edge, align the dots to the last row or column of holes, and continue dotting.

The dots are .125" apart in rows and columns. I'm working on a .0625" version, too.

The dot holes are approximately 0.0546875" in diameter and are purposefully designed to only fit the lead technical pencils as a strategy to ensure the grid is as uniform as possible. I use and recommend Pentel P200 Series pencils like the P203 .3mm and P205 .5mm.

The “top” is the smooth side with a chamfer to guide your pencil tip into the center, though you can use it either way based on which feels better to you when you use it. With the smooth side up, the rough 3D-printed surface tends to grip the paper.

Prefer to buy the stencil already printed? You can!

Next up is using a .2 mm nozzle to get a better end product. Stay tuned.

Revision History

v1 - 2023-08-28: Initial release

v2 - 2023-11-10: D'oh! Just realized that I published the model with the chamfer on the wrong side. Fixed.

v3 - 2024-02-03: Increased template thickness to 0.0625", added a corner fillet, and tweaked the print settings.
