Description

This is, admittedly, a pretty niche solution to a pretty specific problem, but it works for what I needed.

I was looking for a way to move my 24-port network switch off of my homelab wireframe rack shelf to make room for new equipment, but wasn't finding any ready-made solutions that fit in my workspace. The only way I could get the space I needed was to hang the rack and use vertical space.

I settled on a wall-mountable 3U network rack from Amazon, but there was no obvious way to mount it to the wireframe rack, so I created this mounting bracket.

Main features:

  • Works with standard commercial wireframe shelving
  • Minimal thickness to not interfere with usage of shelf space above
  • Inlaid grooves to prevent lateral slip
  • Lateral support to stabilize hanging cantilever load
  • Pre-threaded holes for M5 screws. Can also use heat set inserts.

You will need 4x M5 x 12mm (or longer) screws to mount the rack from the underside of the shelf. I used M5 x 20mm, and had 9.3mm sticking out the top. I decided to also create an M5 thumb nut to help cover the excess length, prevent snagging on any cables or wires I might be using on the upper shelf, and to bear some extra load and prevent screw slippage.

I printed this in PETG with 6 walls and 25% Gyroid infill for added strength, but even my draft prototypes seemed more than strong enough to handle the 7 lbs combined load of the rack and switch.
