Description

This is a detailed T.A.R.D.I.S. lamp which uses the LED Lamp disk available from the Bambu Lab store.

This famed TARDIS from Doctor Who stands just over 17cm tall when built and (whilst it helps and may improve quality), can be printed almost as pictured without an AMS (with the exception of the sign on the door).

Prefer a multi-material verision?
An AMS friendly multi-material version is also available here

0.2mm and 0.4mm nozzle versions

I have also included two versions of both the sign on the door, and the signs at the top, one version that is compatible with a standard 0.4mm nozzle, and one version which uses the finer detail capable with a 0.2mm nozzle allowing for a more accurate representation of the actual TARDIS. The simplfied 0.4mm top sign however can be printed multi-colour without an AMS, just print it face down, with the first layer black, and the rest white.

Update: I've uploaded an additional profile which includes the more detailed top signs which are designed for printing with a 0.2mm nozzle, but if printed upright, you can actually still print them with a 0.4mm nozzle. It is worth noting though that whilst this full detail top sign can be printed with a 0.4mm nozzle in this orientation, it will require an AMS. If you can only print with a 0.4mm nozzle and don't have an AMS (or other multi-material setup), please use my simplified top sign.

You can see in these pictures I'm holding the 0.4mm versions next to the 0.2mm versions which are fitted to the Tardis:

The Parts Explained

As I've designed this to be printable with or without an AMS, there are quite a few parts and I'll explain each of them below:

  • 0.4 Door Note - This is the sign for the door simplified to allow printing with a 0.4mm nozzle
  • 0.4 Top Sign - This is the sign at the top of the TARDIS saying “POLICE BOX”, simplified to allow printing with a 0.4 mm nozzle. This should also be printable without an AMS by printing it face down, printing the first layer in black, and then switching to white from the second layer. You'll need 4 of these.
  • Base Cap - This screws into the base to hold the LED lamp in place once fitted
  • Door Handle - This is the main door handle. It can be printed with a 0.2mm or 0.4mm nozzle, but if you're using a 0.2mm one for the signs anyway, print this with them as you'll get better detail with that.
  • Door Note - This is the sign for the door designed to be printed with a 0.2mm nozzle
  • Key Hole - This is the keyhole on the door. It can be printed with a 0.2mm or 0.4mm nozzle, but if you're using a 0.2mm one for the signs anyway, print this with them as you'll get better detail with that.
  • Light Cap - This is the blue cap that sits on the top of the light columb on the top of the TARDIS. This should just push fit onto the light.
  • Mini Door Handle - This is the slightly smaller handle which sits next to the sign on the door. It can be printed with a 0.2mm or 0.4mm nozzle, but if you're using a 0.2mm one for the signs anyway, print this with them as you'll get better detail with that.
  • Reflector - This fits to the underneath of the lid and is designed to reflect the light shining up from the LED disk outwards onto the windows. You'll want to print this white unless you wanted to tint the colour of the light that hits the windows.
  • Reflector screw - This screws down into the reflector and then the other side into the base of the lid
  • Tardis Body - This is the bulk of the Tardis body. This requires some support material at the bottom for where the LED light is fitted
  • Tardis Lid - This is the top part of the Tardis, and the only other part that requires support material.
  • Top Light - This is a thin white column which pushes into the top of the lid
  • Top Sign - This is the sign at the top of the TARDIS designed for printing with a 0.2mm nozzle. I don't believe this version will print without an AMS. You'll need 4 of these
  • Window Inserts - These are the windows which slot in on the inside of the body. You'll need 8 of these.

Assembly Instructions

Once everything is printed follow the steps below.

Please note, much of this will just push-fit and clip into place, but some parts such as the door handles, keyhole, and possibly the windows, may require the tiniest dab of glue to nicely fix them in place.

Step 1

Take the reflector screw, and screw it into the bottom of the reflector, then screw that whole unit into the base of the lid.

Step 2

Take the top signs, push one end into the spacing on the lid, then run your finger along it and push the rest in place.
Then take the top light and push the thinner end down into the top of the lid, The thicker section should push a few mm down into the lip.
Finally click the light cap down onto the top of the top light.

Step 3

Take the windows 1 at a time and insert them into the frames on the inside of the tardis. These may need a tiny dab of glue on the outer edge to keep them in place.
If glue is required, give it a chance to dry before continuing.

Then affix the two handles, the door sign, and key hole to the front of the TARDIS (these will very likely require the tiniest dab of glue)

Step 4

Remove the support material from underneath the TARDIS Body. This may take a bit of work (try using a pair of pliers to help you), and ensure it's clean and free of any interface layers to make sure everything will fit.
Then take the LED lamp (any LED light which is 59.5 x 8.25mm should fit, but this was designed with the LED Lamp Kit-001 from the Bambu Labs store in mind) and slot it into the base, then screw the base cap on.

Step 5

Line the lid up, slot it down onto the body, flick the switch on, and enjoy your new TARDIS lamp. Alons-y!

Printing Instructions

I'd advise using my profiles for printing this as I've ensured everything will print well, but here's some notes:

  • Print everything at 0.1mm layer height or smaller
  • Whilst I've included versions of the signs specifically for 0.2mm nozzle, if you are printing them with a 0.2mm nozzle, also print the door handles and key hole with them too.
  • If you're printing the signs with an AMS, print them face down.
  • The TARDIS Body requires support material under the base to support the area the LED will be fitted and the underneath of the first layer of the screw fitting. I'd highly suggest tree supports here, and if you are slicing it yourself, please reference the areas I've painted for supports in my profile.
  • The TARDIS Lid requires support for the bottom two bottom layers of each of the 4 sign slots. Do NOT allow any infil on any of the areas underneath the lid (such as where the screw fitting is).
  • I had no problem printing the door handles and keyhole as they are, but if you do tend to have adhesion problems, you may want to add a brim to these.

Print Profiles

I've included three print profiles.

1 - One includes everything you need to print this with a 0.4mm nozzle, spread over 3 print plates:

  • Blue Parts
  • White Parts
  • Detail Parts (Black, White, Silver / Signs, handles, key hole)

2 - The other is for printing with a 0.2mm nozzle and includes just one plate which features the 0.2mm signs, the handles, and the key hole).

3 - I've uploaded an additional profile which includes the more detailed top signs which are designed for printing with a 0.2mm nozzle, but if printed upright, you can actually still print them with a 0.4mm nozzle. It is worth noting though that whilst this full detail top sign can be printed with a 0.4mm nozzle in this orientation, it will require an AMS. If you can only print with a 0.4mm nozzle and don't have an AMS (or other multi-material setup), please use my simplified top sign.

Fantastic design. Thank you. I had a led light strip so put that inside instead of printing the lamp holder. Also if it helps anyone I reduced the walls from 4 to 3 to save filament and time, still came out beautiful.

Love the modell, but the tolerance for screwing the light reflector is way to tight.

Hey there. Really glad you like the model but sorry to hear you've been having issues. I've personally printed the final version of this model 4 times (and previous iterations many more times) and I've always found the light reflector screwed in absolutely perfectly. Could I ask what printer and filament you used with this? If the filament doesn't deal with overhangs well (either because the filament has absorbed moisture or the filament profile isn't so appropriate for it) then the threads may not come out perfectly and make it a little tighter.

I'm using the A1 mini and SUNLU Pla. The threads comes out just fine, but the negative space in the roof is the problem (the cylinder does not really fit). The filament prints just fine on other models, but it is not newly dried. Might be the filament but i doubt it, but since I'm not sure its not fair to only give 4 stars. Changing.

Hmm, strange. There could still be an impact on the thread inside the lid (which presumably is using a different reel of filament (blue rather than the white of the light reflector). Out of curiosity, does the 'Reflector screw' part fit into the reflector itself fine, as the negative space and threading in the reflector is identical to that inside the lid.

I still prefer the original model that I did with the Tardis in November 2023 here: https://youtu.be/ctoaVSUL5eM?si=K6ZoSPYWUFZSKYcM I designed a custom partition for the wire and printed the bulb on top, and windows in clear filament and they light up perfectly.

easy to print, I printed the font with a 0.4 nozzle, I think 0.2 would look better

This is a very nice model. Is it possible to include a model that includes just blank plates. I have a Doctor Who Pinball Machine and it has a Tardis and I would like to try use this model. I want to use water slide decals or possibly custom made decals. Thank you.

Hey, that sounds like a fantastic idea. By blank plates, do you mean the signs? As in, no writing on them?

Replying to @ByteSlinger :
Yes, the signs would need to be blank, no writing.

I'll try and upload some blank ones when I get a minute, however if you printed the ones I've already included but in just one colour, and fitted them to the TARDIS back to front, I think that'd do exactly what you're after.
