Description

This design features

  1. Air-tight filament dry box based on a off-the-shelf cereal box / storage container
  2. Storage for silicat gel
  3. Control with hygrometer
  4. Direct feed as external spool
  5. Label the filament boxes with material & printing temperatures (Pen & labels comes with the boxes)
  6. Target cost around 10€/filament box

Description

I wanted to come up with a cheap solution (cost see below) for drying and storing used filament spools and to be able to use them as external spools.

Furthermore I wanted to keep track on the drystage to be able to switch the silica gel on time.

The idea is to not modify the box at all, to be able to reuse them if needed in future (no drilling or glue).
The original lid can be just popped out and replaced with the printed part.

Printing

I used cheap Sunlu Antistring PLA with the Bambu generic PLA print profile with 0,2 layer height, 2 wall, no support and 15% infill.

The whole lid/cover & rollers set for one filament box prints in 2h 20min and uses 70,7g (PLA)

Two set fit on a 256mm buildplate and prints in 4h 08min.

The lid/cover only prints in 26min and uses 9,66g.

I also added the fusion 360 file, so you can make changes if needed.

Also added following verions of the lid:

  1. Lid with thermostat & filament passthrough
  2. Lid with thermostat & without filament passthrough
  3. Lid without thermostat & filament passthrough

Updates

Version 2.3
First public release here on makerworld

Version 2.4
I noticed that the tube often slides to deep into the box, so I added a small chamfer and a hole to be able to stick the filament on the upper part back into the box. This makes it way easier to grab the filament from the PFTE tube.
Added alto two pluges in case, the PTFE tube is not needed to cover the holes an keep the box airtight.

Thanks for the great design. I made a remix and added a custom lid/cover to also hold an hygrometer. https://makerworld.com/en/models/165093

Do you maybe have a version for hydrometer with "clips" that are rotates by 20 degrees? something like this: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61peQaS0r6L._SL1500_.jpg

I uploaded a 20 degree version under the name: "Filament box lid 20degree 2.4.stl" (see RAW files) Does this work for you?

@Leinich3D very sorry. i made mistake in my calculation. correct angle = 31.1 Would it be possible for you to change it? If not, maybe u can share step file and i can do it. Cheers

The only issue I have is feed. There seems to be too much tension on the line when it's trying to pull through. Is there a way to get reduce the tension? I don't see a way to feed this from the side. I'm going from level with the printer over spool holder so it's inline with sensor and then down to extruder. If I don't pull extra out for it there is always a tug back from the tension on the line.

never had issues with too much tension. I'm using a printed PETG Y-Splitter to feed the filament on the left side. Actually this tube is shorter than the tube in the AMS. Is this something related to the filament type? like only with TPU?

Might be because of a wrong heading of the insert, should be like in the picture above, the smaller side has to be the one with the lid. At least this solved my stucking problems :)

A very good solution. Thank you very much. What exactly are the hoses in the holes that look like a bracket at the top of the lid?

Those are PTFE Tubes. This allows to use the Drybox as an external Spool, without the need to remove the filament spool. I can recommend: https://makerworld.com/en/models/18190#profileId-17064
