Description

Basic information

These are minimized spools as filament swatches with optional labels to put inside.

Mini filament spools are a dime a dozen. But none have met my requirements so far. Either they were too big, too small, too loose, couldn't be labeled etc. pp. - so I decided to design my own.

  • They come in two sizes, a 6 row and an 8 row version.
  • The outer diameter is 27 mm.
  • The width is 12 mm.
  • One spool consists of 3 parts: 2x side part (SpoolShell) and 1x filament (Filament_6Row / Filament_8Row)
  • No glue is required, they are very tight-fitting.
  • Optionally you can print out the "Paper label spooler" to store small labels inside the spool. A template for the labels is also available.

Model information

One mini filament spool consists of the following components:

  • 2x Side part (MiniFilamentSpools_SpoolShell.STL)
  • 1x Filament part (MiniFilamentSpools_Filament_XRows.STL)

There are two versions of the filament part - a more detailed one with 8 rows and a bigger one with 6 rows - its just a matter of taste :)

Optionally you can print out the "Paper label spooler". It is a small tool with which you can roll up paper labels and insert them directly into your mini spools.

Print instructions

If possible I would recommend using my *.3mf file. Everything is included in there on different printbeds with optimal settings.

If you cant use it - no problem - its easy to print.

Simply print the 3 parts per spool and the optional "Paper Spooler Tool" with 0.16mm optimal settings on a 0.4 nozzle. Standard settings for this profile are fine (15% infill + your prefered pattern). The only thing you should add is an inner brim of 2 mm for the "Filament.STL" and an outer brim for the "Paper Spooler Tool". Support is not needed.

If you want to print with an AMS and want to print all four materials at once without wasting material and money, you can use my print profile or set the print sequence to "by object" for the "Filament.STL". In this case, please remember to position them far enough apart.

The print profile is designed for an AMS and to print all four at once and the optional "Paper Spooler Tool" in whatever Material you like with the mentioned settings. I recommend to not alter the layer_height nor the positions of Plate 2 or 3, everything else can be adjusted to your liking.

Assembly instructions

Assembly is really simple. You can find pictures and videos of the assembly steps in the gallery.

Mini spools:
Simply insert one side part from above and one from below into the filament part. That's it!

The model is designed so that no glue is required. You may therefore need a little force. I recommend using a large flat object to press the side parts into the filament part (see pictures / video).

Optional labels:
If you want to use the optional labels, feel free to use my template or create your own. The labels have a size of 10 mm x 60 mm - you can of course also make them shorter / longer. I used the Calibri font in Bold and 10 pt.

Then print and cut them out and use the "Paper Label Spooler" as shown in the pictures / video to roll the labels and insert them into the spool.

If you have questions or suggestions for improvement, don't be shy. :)
