Description

The stock trays for Castles of Burgundy: Special Edition were quickly showing wear and tear in my short time with them, and I also wanted to be able to table the game more quickly. This insert is designed to assist with setup and teardown and is my attempt to minimize the amount of filament required overall.

This insert DOES accommodate placing the neoprene mat INSIDE the game box with minimal lid lift. I've also included files for gamers without the neoprene mat, as well as those without the acrylic hex tiles.

Note: I do not have the additional acrylic tokens add-on (workers, shields, vines, bonus tiles), and this insert probably will not work for those due to the increased thickness. If I get my hands on the acrylic token set, I may revisit this insert.

Thank you to js500 here on Printables for his help with this project. He is a valuable resource and directly impacted the design of the insert with his insights and advice. Go check out his own fantastic inserts!

Print settings: 0.4mm nozzle, 0.2mm layer height, 15% infill, no supports needed.

Edit 12/11: added a slightly roomier ship/castle/inn/mine tray for those who place stickers on the acrylic tiles

For all variations, print one of each of the following STLs:

  • bottom spacer
  • chateauma vines
  • trade routes shields
  • 1 castle (tall)
  • 3 castles
  • player tray
  • ship castle mine inn (or cardboard spacer if not using acrylic hex tiles)

For neoprene mat storage, without needing to store the standard game board, print

  • 2x resource tray 2

To store the standard game board, print

  • resource tray 1
  • resource tray 2

For cardboard tiles and standard game board, print

  • resource tray 1
  • resource tray 2
  • cardboard tile tray
  • cardboard spacer

Fitting everything in the box (pictures 1-4):

  • Box Bottom - I store the solo and 2-player boards here, though they can be placed higher up as desired.
  • Layer 1 - vineyard expansion, alternate the tiles and place vine tray on top with feet against the box wall flush with corner; secure in place with bottom spacer; place trade routes shields and chateauma vines on the other side of the box
  • Place player boards (I keep plastic inserts with the individual boards) on top of Layer 1.
  • Layer 2 - place ship castle mine inn (or cardboard spacer if not using acrylic hex tiles) on the short side of the box. Then place 3 castles and 1 castle (tall) next to it, with all duchy tiles in the remaining space.

Now, with acrylic tiles and neoprene mat (pictures 5-9):

  • Layer 3 - with the acrylic tiles in their respective bags, place the livestock (green) and monastery (yellow) bags folded as shown, with the other bags folded along the narrow edge of the box. Place the player tray along the opposite narrow edge, using the green and yellow tile bags for support. Place 2x resource tray 2 in the remaining space beside the player tray. Place player aids and rule book on top of the player tray. Roll the neoprene mat tightly and angle across the top of the player tray and tile bags. Replace box lid and rejoice!

Or, with acrylic tiles and standard game board (pictures 10-12):

  • Layer 3 - with the acrylic tiles in their respective bags, place the livestock (green) and monastery (yellow) bags folded as shown, with the other bags folded along the narrow edge of the box as seen in pictures 6 and 7. Place the player tray along the opposite narrow edge, using the green and yellow tile bags for support. Place resource tray 1 and 2 in the remaining space beside the player tray. Note the difference in geometry between resource tray 1 & 2 (green circle). Place player aids on top of the player tray, followed by the game board and rule book.

Or, with cardboard tiles and standard game board (pictures 13-17):

  • In Layer 2 instead of printing ship castle mine inn, print cardboard spacer and place along the narrow side of the box.
  • Layer 3 - roll/fold all empty bags and place with cardboard token tray as shown in picture 14 (red cardboard token tray in the image has been fixed to match the length of player tray). Place the player tray along the opposite narrow edge, with resource tray 1 and 2 in the remaining space beside the player tray. Note the difference in geometry between resource tray 1 & 2 (green circle). Place the player aids, game board, and rulebook as shown in pictures 15-17.

Thanks for making it to the end of my long post! I hope this insert helps with your gaming sessions for this fantastic version of Castles of Burgundy. Awaken Realms did a marvelous job with the components and reproduction of a classic game. Please let me know if you have any sizing or geometry issues, and happy printing!
