Minifigures compatible base plate for Spider-Man minifigures

Spider-Man, whose real name is Peter Parker, is an American comic book character published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, it first appeared in issue no. 15 of the Amazing Fantasy series (August 1962) in the Silver Age of comics with a short story that was so successful that it convinced the publisher to dedicate its own title to it the following year entitled The Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 1), again currently being published. In addition to the main title, the character has appeared in many other titles such as Web of Spider-Man or The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker is an orphan raised by his uncles May and Ben in New York after the death of his parents Richard and Mary Parker. His stories deal with the struggles of adolescence and financial issues and have many supporting characters such as Flash Thompson, J. Jonah Jameson and Harry Osborn, romantic interests such as Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson and the Black Cat, and enemies such as Goblin, the Doctor Octopus and Venom. In his origin story, he gains superhuman powers from a bite from a radioactive spider; these include climbing to surfaces and ceilings, superhuman strength and agility, and detecting danger with his precognition ability called "spider sense". He also constructs wrist-mounted "web-shooting" devices that shoot artificial webs of his own design that can be used to swing between skyscrapers and fight his enemies. After his late Uncle Ben's personal tragedy, Peter began using his spider powers to fight crime as Spider-Man.

When Spider-Man first appeared in the early 1960s, teenagers in superhero comics were usually relegated to the role of the protagonist's sidekick. The Amazing Spider-Man series broke ground by introducing Peter Parker, a student from Queens, New York, as Spider-Man's secret identity, whose "self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness" were issues that young readers could relate to. While Spider-Man had all the characteristics of a sidekick, unlike previous teenage heroes like Bucky and Robin, Spider-Man did not have a superhero mentor like Captain America and Batman; he then had to learn for himself that "with great power comes great responsibility" – a phrase included in a text box in the final panel of the first Spider-Man story but later retroactively attributed to his guardian, his late uncle Ben Parker. Spider-Man is one of the most popular and successful superheroes of all time. He has been well received and often ranked as one of the most famous and iconic comic book characters of all time and among the most popular characters in all of fiction. Cartoon series, video games and numerous successful films have been dedicated to him. The IGN website placed him in third position in the ranking of the one hundred greatest heroes in the history of comics, after Superman and Batman and before Wolverine, thus being first in the ranking among the characters published by Marvel Comics.
