Description

Summary

UPDATED: 2024-FEB.

I added an additional adapter sleeve that allows for safer use on TurboGrafx-16 consoles. The stock 69 pin header can bend pins when installing or removing if you are not careful, so the adding the adapter sleeve will keep it aligned with the plug and keep your pins safe. It's a press fit and is held on the 69-pin female header by friction. If you have one with a header that was cut down from a longer piece then you may need to file/grind the ends until you get the width correct (59mm). Make sure to do it so that the spacing is even on both sides. Press the adapter on so that it is flush with the front of the black pin header.

Also the version in my print profile was slightly updated to have multi-color labels, better hole spacing, replaced round corners with chamfers (better printability) and proper fit holes for M3 screws.

I've created a shell that will fit one of the particular styles of PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 AV-Boosters which can be found on eBay among other places. Not sure how many of these are out there but if you have one and need a shell here it is. Note that I'm not necessarily recommending or endorsing any import AV-Boosters. Read on below for my 2¢ on PCE/TG16 video mods.

About this shell:
There 2 bottom models and one top with text labels. I initially made the shell to be compact, but that makes it about 5.5-6mm short of sitting flat on a table when plugged into the expansion bus of a console. I recommend either putting rubber feet on it or use the thick bottom to fill in the gap.
You'll also need 2 screws m3x6mm or m3x8mm for the standard base.

...and another thing, I'm not saying I 'forgot' to add holes to the top for the 2 power indicator lights or light guides, but there aren't any there. All they do is indicate power status so I decided I don't care to revise and reprint just for that at this time since they are unnecessary to me.

My 2¢
This particular AV-Booster board is a Composite/Component/RGB output version and despite the fact that many of these 'cheap import' models are not so good, this one is of fairly nice quality and video performance and it runs without external power on my consoles without issue (for AV and RGB). Its certainly better video output (component or RGB) than the common HDMI upscaler cables that are out there on Amazon. Those are usable but color saturation and sharpness are hugely sacrificed on those. Your best bet is a "db GrafxBooster" for easy no-mod output or do a quality internal mod (Voultar's for example) if you want to do it right. I have installed Voultar's RGB mod on a few of my own console and will endorse that, but you also need cabling and the necessary equipment to use that. As for the jailbars issue on NEC consoles the only fix is using higher value capacitors on the board's video signal lines which requires opening it up to do anyhow. Also apparently some of these also have reverese L+R stereo. To correct it either swap the red and while audio cables when plugging in or better is cut the traces on the board and run bodge wires to correct it on the board.
