3D model description

Basavanna, also known as Basaveshwara, was a 12th-century philosopher, statesman, and social reformer in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. He is considered the founding saint of the Lingayat sect, which emerged as a distinct community within Hinduism. Basavanna's teachings emphasized the equality of all humans, irrespective of caste, creed, or gender. His philosophy, known as "Lingayatism" or "Virashaivism," challenged the prevailing social order of his time and advocated for social justice, human rights, and individual dignity.

Key principles of Basavanna's teachings include:

  1. Equality: He preached the idea of spiritual equality, asserting that one's worth should be determined by their character and actions rather than their birth or social status.

  2. Rejecting Caste Hierarchy: Basavanna vehemently opposed the caste system and the discrimination it perpetuated. He advocated for a casteless society where everyone had equal opportunities and rights.

  3. Devotion to Shiva: Basavanna's followers, known as Lingayats, worship Shiva as the supreme deity. However, their devotion is characterized by personal experience and inner transformation rather than elaborate rituals or priestly intermediaries.

  4. Dasoha: Basavanna emphasized the concept of Dasoha, which means selfless service and sharing with others. He believed in the importance of helping the less fortunate and contributing to the welfare of society.

  5. Vachana Literature: Basavanna and his contemporaries composed Vachanas, which are devotional poems expressing their spiritual insights and social concerns. These Vachanas are revered as sacred texts by Lingayats and are characterized by their simplicity, directness, and universal appeal.

Basavanna's teachings had a profound impact on the social, cultural, and religious landscape of Karnataka and continue to inspire millions of people to this day. He is remembered as a visionary thinker, a champion of social justice, and a symbol of resistance against oppression.
