Historical background:

Pegasus Bridge, located in Bénouville, Normandy, France, gained immense historical significance during World War II, particularly during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. It was a crucial objective for the Allied forces as part of Operation Deadstick, the glider assault to secure key bridges and prevent German reinforcements from reaching the invasion beaches.

In the early hours of June 6, 1944, British airborne troops of the 6th Airborne Division, under the command of Major John Howard, landed near Pegasus Bridge in Horsa gliders. Their mission was to seize and hold the bridge intact to prevent German counterattacks.

Despite facing fierce opposition and heavy gunfire, the British paratroopers successfully captured Pegasus Bridge within minutes of landing. The surprise attack caught the German defenders off guard, and the bridge was secured with minimal casualties.

The capture of Pegasus Bridge was a significant strategic achievement for the Allies. It provided a vital crossing point over the Caen Canal and secured the eastern flank of the invasion area. The successful operation paved the way for the rapid advance of Allied forces inland during the Normandy campaign.

Today, Pegasus Bridge stands as a symbol of courage and valor, commemorating the bravery of the British airborne troops who carried out the daring assault. It remains an important historical site, visited by tourists and veterans alike, to honor the sacrifices made during one of the pivotal moments of World War II.
